Thanks to our supporters, The Salvation Army Northern Division is able to help people in Minnesota and North Dakota who face challenges large and small … even as small as securing a birthday cake.

Such was the case when a single mother came to one of our food shelves. She appeared to be very sad, and when our food shelf worker asked her why, the mother explained that she couldn’t afford to buy a cake for her daughter’s birthday today.

After hearing this news, the worker headed to a back room and dug through a pallet of donations received that morning from a local grocery store. The worker then discovered a big, beautiful birthday cake with the theme, “Happy Birthday, Princess!”

The worker gave the cake to the mother and she was overwhelmed with joy and happiness. She couldn’t wait to go home and celebrate with her daughter.

We had an amazing time today and are deeply grateful for the opportunity to honor our veterans at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. Taking time to distribute donuts on National Donut Day to express our appreciation for their service and sacrifice was incredibly meaningful. We will never forget the courage, dedication, and selflessness they have shown in serving our country.

10,000 donuts. One great cause. 🍩💪

We're honored to team up with Salvation Army North and DAV Department of Minnesota to help sponsor 10,000 donuts in celebration of National Donut Day.

National Donut Day began as a way to honor the Salvation Army volunteers who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. More than a century later, it's still about community, service, and giving back.

National Donut Day is almost here!

This Friday, we’re teaming up with “Cake Boss” Buddy Valastro, owner of Carlo’s Bakery at Mall of America, to spread joy in the Twin Cities by honoring veterans and first responders. Through donut distributions and acts of gratitude, we’re recognizing the service and sacrifice that inspired The Salvation Army to start National Donut Day nearly 90 years ago.
