Did you know that the Eastern Mole has tiny hidden eyes? They are behind an unopenable flap of skin and act as rudimentary light sensors while digging underground.

Here are some other fun mole facts:

- Eastern Moles eat almost exclusively worms and other insects.
- Moles are among the softest animals in the world due to their high follicle count and lack of directional grain (it grows straight out).
- Moles find prey using Eimer's organs in their noses. These are considered the most sensitive organs possessed by any mammal.

Many of you are cleaning up your yards today, and probably tomorrow, from these back-to-back storms. We hope you all are doing well and those who have lost electricity have it restored soon!

At WRC, dozens of storm-affected orphans were admitted today, and this baby Hoary Bat is certainly one of the cutest.

Last night, she and her mom were clinging to a tree when it blew down in the storm. As they crashed to the ground, her mother suffered a deadly wound. When they got to us, the only thing left to do for mom was provide a more humane ending than nature would have. Thankfully, the little one seems to have escaped significant wounds. Her mother’s last act was to protect her.

She currently has a private space in our mammal nursery, and a guarded prognosis. Baby bat care is challenging, but with a lot of care and a bit of luck we are hoping she will recover from the traumatic events that brought her to us and continue to grow.

Thank you for carefully inspecting downed trees and branches while cleaning up your yards. If you find animals in need of help, we are here for you.

This weekend two young locals, Quinn and Liam, proved how for them when they donated $35 to the animals in our care!

After bringing us a rabbit last week and hearing that we are funded by donations, they decided to raise money selling the delicious strawberries and honeyberries from their garden.

We think that their commitment to helping a wild animal, and their clever idea to raise the money are so inspiring! Our patients can't thank you, but we sure can. You are incredible Quinn and Liam!

Shout out to Minnesota Children's Museum for giving this wild family the space they need.

They called us to ask for advice when a pigeon made a nest on their rooftop sensory garden. We let them know that the best way to keep this family safe is to give them a wide berth, so they temporarily blocked off this corner of the garden. And they turned it into a wonderful learning opportunity for kids and their parents!

We’re not sure if there is anything cuter than a baby American Woodcock. The giant bill, the clown feet - the beautiful markings, all in a package that weighs less than three nickels. Yep. Put three nickels in your hand (assuming you have cash on you) and imagine it this cute fluffball.

While considered “precocial” because from the time they hatch they move around with mom, they cannot thermoregulate at this age and they need mom to help them learn to grab tasty morsels.

They are fragile at this age and this little chick is heading to a licensed specialist for care.

PS: If we were to say another “peep” might be cuter than the woodcock, it would be a young Killdeer chick. You can compare and form your own cuteness opinion by going to our IG page. They arrived at our center within an hour of each other and will be traveling together to the rehab specialist. (be sure to weigh-in your opinion in our comments!)

Wow! You’ve made this year’s annual Baby Shower the most successful one. So far you all have come together to donate more than $16,000 worth of supplies to our patients.

Our youngest Mammal Nursery patients, like this little Raccoon, have bellies full of nutritional formula thanks to your generosity.

This juvenile American Robin, and a couple hundred of its friends, have beautiful new enclosures and feeding dishes – not to mention tasty bugs purchased through our site’s Sponsorship Wish List.

And our Waterfowl Nursery birds, like these adorable Trumpeter Swan Cygnets, are happy and healthy in a new facility that has been outfitted by your gifts.

We’re in our final week and hoping to close-out the remaining items on the Baby Shower List: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2CPFNJKMTYS6F?ref_=wl_share

Thank you for sharing with your friends as well to help us finish strong!

Splish-splashing, snacking, and playing hide-n-seek, these young Trumpeter Swan cygnets are thriving in our new Aquatic Species Facility.
