Yesterday afternoon, Lake County Fire Rescue crews responded to a residential structure fire in the City of Leesburg. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a single family home with heavy smoke and fire conditions.

During a secondary search of the home, firefighters from Lake County Ladder 56 located an unresponsive adult inside. Firefighters from Ladder 56 and Engine 59 worked together to quickly remove the homeowner from the structure so care could be provided. Tragically, the homeowner later succumbed to his injuries. Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with his family and loved ones.

This is not an outcome to celebrate. It is, however, a sobering reminder of why adequate staffing and the closest available response matter.

Searching a burning home and removing a victim requires firefighters to operate quickly in an environment where conditions can change in seconds. Every firefighter available on that apparatus makes a difference.

Lake County Fire Rescue operates 28 frontline units, yet only 12 are staffed with three firefighters around the clock. The remaining 16 operate with two. When lives are at stake, staffing cannot be an afterthought.

This incident also reinforces the importance of a comprehensive first response agreement between Lake County and the municipalities within the Lake County fire system. Fire and medical emergencies do not recognize jurisdictional boundaries. The closest appropriate unit should respond to every emergency, regardless of the name on the side of the truck.

We will continue advocating for adequate staffing and a response system that puts the needs of the people we serve first. Yesterday is a painful reminder of why both matter.

Our deepest condolences remain with the homeowner’s family and everyone affected by this loss.

Well folks, today marks the first official day of the 2026-2027 school year and as always, myself, K-9 Saint, and all of our team members at the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, want everyone to have a safe and successful school year!!

In order to do that we need our drivers out on the roadway to make sure that we allow extra time in the morning for our routes to school and work, as there will be more people traveling and of course school buses stopping to load kids along the way!! Along with stopping for the buses, make sure you are paying attention to your speeds, especially in the school zones, which will all be active starting this morning and each afternoon!!

Also, as you know, many of our school aged children walk or ride their bikes to school, which means they will be crossing the street to make it to their destinations, so let's keep the cell phones down and any other distractions put away so that our attention is completely on the road!!

Parents, another big safety issue is kids riding their e-bikes. Please make sure you review all of the safety laws with them, especially regarding their speeds, sharing the sidewalks, and when to appropriately cross the street!! Make sure they have a helmet…and are actually wearing it, as it could be the difference between life and death in the event of an accident!!

And of course a huge shoutout to all of our School Resource Deputies, Officers, Guardians, and our K-9 team members who stand ready to welcome back all of the students and teachers back to their respective campuses!!
