Where else does Christmas Eve mean thousands of people gathering on the beach to watch hundreds of Santas catch waves?

What began as a small family outing in Cocoa Beach in 2009 has grown into Surfing Santas, a beloved Space Coast tradition that brings hundreds of costumed surfers and thousands of spectators together each year.

It’s fun, a little unexpected and distinctly ours. Traditions like this are part of what gives the Space Coast its character, creating the kind of community people don’t just live and work in, but genuinely enjoy being part of.

The next era of human space exploration is taking shape right here on Florida’s Space Coast.

Lockheed Martin serves as NASA’s lead contractor for the Orion spacecraft, designed to carry astronauts on missions to the Moon and support the future of deep space exploration. At Kennedy Space Center, teams assemble, test and prepare Orion spacecraft for missions beyond Earth, with additional Orion production work taking place at Lockheed Martin’s STAR Center in Titusville.

That work is gaining recognition here on Earth, too, with Orion representing Brevard County as a nominee in the Florida Chamber’s 2026 Coolest Thing Made in Florida competition.

It’s one more example of what makes this region different. We don’t just watch the future launch from here. We help build it.
