At this morning's juror's brunch at the Figge Art Museum, it was mentioned that few watercolor paintings were entered in the current exhibit. Wanting to find out if interest in this medium is waning, I found this article. Perhaps a bit of "bias" as the arist interviewed are established pros. (No publishing date on this.)

Learn why you too can learn to paint in watercolor from these top masters of the medium.

It's been a great response to the RIAG/ Figge exhibition. The territory was expanded to include Des Moines and Chicago, and images of more than 700 pieces were received. The Figge Art Museum selected Susan Watts , owner of Olsen-Larsen Galleries in Des Moines, as juror. Selected entries are being delivered this week- it won't be long now!
Thinking of jurors for art exhibits, this article from Professional Artist Magazine may answer some questions about the process. Comments in it by Kathy Miller Stone, an experienced jurist, regarding jury panels and nepotism are thought-provoking.

Entering an art show, at any level of your career, is a wonderful judge of gaining validation and recognition.

The Guild was happy to provide funding for this program.

"For three weeks in July of 2021, Azubuike provided art instruction for kids attending the summer program at the Martin Luther King Center in Rock Island. Local artist Gwen Ballard Patton taught two classes on Tuesdays from 1:00-3:00 for nine and ten-year-olds, and two classes on Wednesdays from 1:00-3:00 for seven and eight-year-olds. The kids created and customized portfolios from corrugated cardboard, then created artwork to go inside their portfolios. Their work went home with them at the end of the summer program."

Sadly, the group wasn't able to meet in person this past year, but accomplishments are being made via "virtual" voting. The Guild members voted to fund art materials for several non-profit groups: the R.I. Library's summer art program and future arts/ crafts programs for adults, the Rocky High Resource Room outreach to families project, Quad City Arts programming, the Figge outreach programs for children, R.I. elementary students for the Figge "Young Artist's" exhibit in May, Spring Forward summer camps, and awards for Q.C. Arts High school students represented in the yearly high school exhibit.

Warm weather memories: examples of work by student participants of "Dragon Tales", this past summer's Rock Island Library virtual art program. The Art Guild provided funding for art supplies! IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union donated folders which were turned into "portfolios". Each portfolio was filled with paper and instructions for 6 art classes, and each participant received water-soluble color pencils and a paint brush. Thirty children participated. The classes were taught by Art Guild member Gloria Burlingame. These pieces from session 1 involved blank pop-up eggs on which the artists created dragon embryoes.
