Dan Miguel was wrapping up a day of bass fishing on Lake Ontario when he spotted something unusual. A bird was standing on something floating in the water. He and his buddy pulled over to investigate. What they found was a scene straight out of a predator horror film. Two dead muskies were floating belly up. One had the other lodged in its throat. The larger fish was around 52 inches. The smaller one was close behind. "I've seen weird things before," Miguel said, "but nothing like this."

Muskies are known to eat almost anything. Snakes, ducks, muskrats, and plenty of fish. But a 4-foot muskie eating another 4 foot muskie is something else. Miguel tried to pull them apart but realized quickly both were dead. The larger fish had been dead for a while. The smaller one's gills were pinned shut. He speculates the two were not trying to eat each other, but fighting. Muskies are extremely territorial, especially during spring spawning season. An intruder swimming onto their turf can trigger a deadly confrontation. This time, both lost.

Crews wrapped up Muskie sampling at Cave Run Lake this week!

Here are notes from our fisheries team:

🐟 Muskie were found primarily on deeper cuts and not really relating to anything shallow.

🐟 There were littler stocker-sized fish everywhere-- shoutout to our awesome hatchery folks for providing those babies for future fishing!

🐟Water temps were in the low to mid-50’s in Scott’s Creek and upper 40’s to 50 degrees in Caney and on the dam.

✨ BONUS REPORT ✨ Bass WERE shallow and tight to wood everywhere the team was on the lower lake. Scott’s Creek was stacked with bass!

Reminder! This was a mid-week report, and fish locations will change with the coming changes in the weather patterns.
