This fall Genesee RiverWatch and the Genesee Waterways Center wrapped up the 2026 paddling season with three group paddles:

Saturday, Sept 12 we explored the Erie Canal
Saturday, Sept 19 we paddled the Lower River to Petten Street
Saturday, Oct 3 was our ROC the Riverway Skyline Paddle

A unique opportunity awaits you! NYSDEC Region 8 to Stock Lake Sturgeon in Genesee River on October 14

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Region 8 Bureau of Fisheries recently announced stocking of lake sturgeon in the Genesee River at the Port of Rochester, 4630 Lake Avenue in Rochester. This family-friendly event will be held on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.

Join DEC to watch the release of 1,500 lake sturgeon fingerlings into the Genesee River, observe the young fingerlings, and speak with DEC staff about the importance of lake sturgeon in New York State waters.

We'll go down the Genesee River to the Ford Street Bridge and back to the Waterways Center. Ed Doherty, a true friend of the Genesee, was memorialized Monday at Rochester's Turning Point Park, where the marvelous boardwalk over the river was named in his honor.

Ed was a friend of Genesee RiverWatch, too, providing us generous support in our early days as a VP of the Rochester Area Community Foundation . He'll be remembered with great fondness - especially when we stroll the boardwalk that now bears his name.

Rochester, N.Y. -- The 3,500 ft. boardwalk at Turning Point Park has been dedicated to the late Edward J. Doherty for 31 years of service to the City of Rochester.

Saturday, October 3, is our final paddle of the year!
