The Lampstand

The Lampstand The Lampstand is dedicated to serving survivors of sexual exploitation and trafficking.

Our residential program provides a safe space and comprehensive trauma-informed care for girls who have experienced sexual exploitation and trafficking. We provide wraparound services to adult and juvenile survivors of any gender, sexual orientation, race, religious views, belief system, or background. The Lampstand also provides youth in area schools with prevention education curriculum in an effort to recognize vulnerabilities and safeguard them from potential exploitation. We also train professionals and community members in the Roanoke Valley and surrounding areas to identify, report, and respond appropriately to sexual exploitation and trafficking. No matter what line of work you are in, we believe trafficking training is beneficial to all career fields.

This week, 13 individuals were arrested in connection with an investigation into illicit massage parlors in Roanoke County. Eleven were charged with maintaining a b***y place, and two were charged with frequenting one as a “john,” or buyer.

Human trafficking and sexual exploitation are happening in our own communities, but we don’t always recognize it.

While prostitution may be the visible activity, we must also consider who may be behind the scenes using force, fraud, and coercion to exploit and control others. Those experiencing trafficking are not always easily identified as victims.

At The Lampstand, we are committed to helping our community recognize exploitation and connect those affected with safety, support, and hope.

It’s always a great day when we get to visit our friends at New Creation VA 🌟

Based in Harrisonburg, New Creation VA works to counteract human trafficking through prevention education, community awareness, fair-trade shop, and dignified employment opportunities for survivors and those vulnerable to exploitation. Their work reminds us that fighting trafficking takes all of us, educating our communities, creating opportunities, and standing alongside those impacted.
