Many people believe traffickers are usually strangers, but that’s often not the reality.
In fact, 81% of s*x trafficking survivors were recruited by someone they knew personally. While kidnapping can happen, traffickers are more likely to build trust and a relationship first. This could be a family member, romantic partner, friend, or someone the victim sees as safe.
Understanding this truth can feel overwhelming, but awareness helps us better recognize warning signs and protect ourselves and others from exploitation. It also helps us understand why leaving a trafficking situation can be so difficult for survivors when manipulation and emotional connection are involved.
That's why we work to train schools, business, churches, and groups. The more honestly we talk about what trafficking actually looks like, the harder it becomes for exploitation to hide in plain sight.
