Angels of Assisi

Angels of Assisi Changing the definition of an animal shelter by offering services to benefit the community’s pets and the people who love them.

Community Pet Clinic: Mon-Sat 8:30am-6pm
Adoption Center: Daily 12-6pm

Help is here. Angels of Assisi is changing the role of an animal shelter to include resources, programs, and services to benefit the pets in our communities and the people who love them. We are an independent, nonprofit animal welfare organization serving Southwest Virginia and West Virginia. Along with our Adoption Center and

Farm Sanctuary, we offer a Community Pet Clinic, Rural Veterinary Care, Cruelty Investigations, Disaster Response, and a Safety Net Program for those needing temporary help due to domestic violence or emergency situations.

German Chocolate is one of the ittiest bittiest kittens in our Itty Bitty Kitty Committee, and she's definitely not alone. Right now, we have 6 litters of kittens looking for foster homes ASAP. Summer can be one of the hardest times to find foster families, so even if you can only help for a couple of weeks, it would make a huge difference. If you're able to become an Itty Bitty Kitty Committee foster, please reach out to [email protected] or stop by the Adoption Center open daily between 12-6pm.

A huge thank you to Magic City Sprinkler for sponsoring our Itty Bitty Kitty Committee and helping us care for some of the shelter's most vulnerable animals. Can't foster but still want to help? Consider making a monthly gift to support kittens like German Chocolate and all the little ones still waiting for their chance: https://angelsofassisi.networkforgood.com/projects/300101-itty-bitty-kitty-committee

🚨 Mission: Get Bitsy Adopted By June 20 continues🚨
In just 4 days, Bitsy will reach 7 months in our care, with more time in another local shelter before that. At just 1.5 years old, we can't wait for someone to experience all the love she has to give, and for her to experience all the love, comfort, and adventures that come with being part of a family.

Her adoption fee is sponsored and she's more than ready to spend this summer in a home instead of a kennel.

Could you be the person she's been waiting for? Stop by our Adoption Center to take Bitsy on a walk and find out!

A few snapshots from yesterday's Mobile Pet Health Clinic! Thank you to everyone who came out in the heat, we ended up seeing 97 of your beloved pets! A huge thank you to Roanoke Police Department - VA for partnering with us on this event and to Outdoor Power Equipment for keeping all the pets hydrated with plenty of water throughout the day!

We're also incredibly thankful to our team Dr. Page, Basit, April, and Allison for caring for each and every pet, Amanda for keeping everything running smoothly and welcoming clients, Keith for checking everyone out, and our wonderful volunteers who jumped in to help from the very start.

A lot goes into making these mobile clinics happen and we're grateful for every person who helps us care for the pets in our community!

"Penny is living (and loving) her best life. She is 9 weeks post her last heartworm injection, and is getting used to playing with her sisters now that she is not as restricted on activity. She is such a well-mannered, smart and affectionate dog. She loves laying on the patio furniture in the shade with the fan blowing on her, and sleeps on our bed every night. We are so lucky and thankful that AoA had her at the Mega Adoption Event we attended in December!"

Each weekend, Petunia can be found doing one of her favorite things: overseeing Harmony Farm Sanctuary founder Norm while he works. Petunia has called Harmony home for the past four years after arriving from Regional Center for Animal Care & Protection, and in that time she has become Norm’s faithful sidekick.

Every Saturday and Sunday, while Norm is busy pressure washing around the farm, Petunia stays close by, patiently waiting for him to finish. As soon as the work is done, she heads over for their favorite part of the routine: fresh apples that Norm has sliced and deseeded just for her. It’s a simple tradition, but one that perfectly captures the special bond they share. Petunia always knows where to find Norm and Norm always makes time for his favorite girl.

Take a peek at a day in the life of Petunia, and her many snacks, to see why she’s such a beloved member of the Harmony Farm Sanctuary family. (And wait until the end for some Petunia ASMR) 🐷🍎

❗Long-term foster or foster-to-adopt needed❗
Meko is a handsome, special boy who would love nothing more than a comfy home to call his own. Originally adopted from us as a puppy, Meko is now 2 years old and was returned due to the adopter’s health. We believe he may have experienced a seizure around the time of his surrender, which left him a little wobbly on his feet and may have affected his vision. Despite that, Meko gets around well, enjoys his walks (a harness helps him a lot!), sniffs around the yard, and is still as loving as ever.

He’s great with dogs and children, enjoys being close to his people, and would thrive in a calmer home where he can relax and be part of the family. He should be fed separately from other pets and does best with an elevated food bowl. Like many dogs, he may bark for a couple nights while settling into a new environment, and car rides aren’t really his favorite thing.

What Meko needs most right now is a chance to leave the shelter and spend his days somewhere full of love. We know this sweet boy has so much happiness to give and we’d love to see him enjoying the comfort of a home again as soon as possible. Please stop by our Adoption Center open daily 12-6pm or email [email protected] if you have additional questions!

Bringing home a new pet is one of the most rewarding experiences there is, and it's important to remember that many animals need time to decompress after shelter life. Adjusting to a new home takes patience, consistency, and realistic expectations.

The 3-3-3 Rule is a helpful guideline for understanding that transition. During the first few days, your new companion may be nervous, overwhelmed, or unsure. Over the next few weeks, they'll begin learning your routine and settling into daily life. And after a few months, you'll often start to see their true personality shine as they realize they're safe, loved, and finally home.

Adopting a pet is a lifelong commitment. While our Adoption Promise means we will take back any animal adopted from us if needed, our goal is always a forever home and a forever bond. The time, patience, and grace you invest during those first few months can make all the difference in building a lifetime of love and companionship!
