Angels of Assisi Changing the definition of an animal shelter by offering services to benefit the community’s pets and the people who love them.

Community Pet Clinic: Mon-Sat 8:30am-6pm
Adoption Center: Daily 12-6pm

Help is here. Angels of Assisi is changing the role of an animal shelter to include resources, programs, and services to benefit the pets in our communities and the people who love them. We are an independent, nonprofit animal welfare organization serving Southwest Virginia and West Virginia. Along with our Adoption Center and Farm Sanctuary, we offer a Community Pet Clinic, Rural Veterinary Care, Cruelty Investigations, Disaster Response, and a Safety Net Program for those needing temporary help due to domestic violence or emergency situations.

We had some extra special dog walkers at the Adoption Center today! The Virginia National Guard Recruiting Team of the Roanoke Region, Area 1 aka “Dawg Pound,” stopped by to spend some quality time with our dogs, and we immediately saw just how big of dog lovers they all are! We honestly couldn't tell who was more excited, adoptable Daphne, Oreo, JoJo, Max, and Scarlett (now adopted!) getting out for some extra attention, or the guys getting to spend a couple of hours with them!

Representing communities across Southwest Virginia, from Wise to Rocky Mount, the entire team unanimously agreed they wanted to find a way to support Angels of Assisi. And what better way than giving some deserving shelter dogs a fun day out?

A huge thank you to Master Sergeant Jason Haynes and Sergeant First Class Rashaun Ward for organizing today's visit (and for the awesome T-shirts!), and to the entire Virginia Army National Guard Recruiting Team for your service, generosity, and obvious love for dogs. We loved having you and we know our pups did, too!

Meet October’s Angel of the Month, Lexi! As our Front Desk Manager, Lexi holds down the fort up front, but her skills go far beyond the front desk. She’s always willing to jump in wherever she’s needed, from surgery to wellness and anywhere in between. With an impressive range of skills and a great sense of humor, we are grateful to have Lexi on our team.

Thank you, Lexi, for everything you do!

Trout is one strong little 8-week-old! We’re so glad our Community CT could provide the imaging he needed. The scan helped his care team at Franklin County VA Animal Shelter better understand the extent of damage caused by the fishing line around his neck and determine the next steps in his recovery. Thank you to Franklin County VA Animal Shelter and Friends of FCAS for taking such great care of Trout. We’re all rooting for you, little guy!

Bonus pics of little Trout in the Community CT in the comments! 😻

Jeter came to AoA at just 1 year old and spent three months waiting for his people. During that time, we often heard, “He’s too big.” “He has too much energy.” But Jeter was also a young dog spending most of his day in a kennel. Whenever someone came to meet him, he was SO excited to get out and get some attention that all that pent-up energy came across as just a little too much.

Then a wonderful and understanding couple gave him a chance. Now, Jeter is settled into home life and showing exactly why a shelter environment doesn’t always give you the full picture of a dog. With regular physical and mental stimulation, basic training, and time to learn a new routine, that “high energy” dog has become the perfect companion.

His mom recently shared, “He is the perfect addition to our house, and my husband and I love him so so very much. He's a big happy boy who is much lazier nowadays, but still gets lots of zoomie time.”

This , Jeter is a great reminder to look beyond the kennel and give shelter dogs a chance to show you who they really are.

Thank you for continuing to show up for the Iron Gate 16! The past couple days brought more baths, grooming, and plenty of one-on-one time as these dogs continue to settle in and show us more of their sweet personalities.

Unfortunately, their recovery has hit another bump. A couple of the puppies have tested positive for parvovirus and, because of their shared history and exposure, we know others in the group could be at risk too. Based on their condition when they arrived, we had no reason to believe they ever received routine veterinary care or vaccines, so every dog received age-appropriate vaccinations this weekend.

The positive parvo tests now mean extra treatment, close monitoring, and a little more time before these dogs are ready for their next chapter. Most of the group will be heading to Harmony Farm Sanctuary, while others remain with some dedicated Clinic staff, where they can safely isolate and get the care they need.. These little fighters have already made it through so much, we have high hopes they will make it through this next hurdle!

Keep the good thoughts coming, and any donations made today will go to their continued care! And don’t worry, this little one got plenty of extra blankets, reassurance, and lovin’ after this video. 🥰

September kept us busy in just about every corner of AoA and the numbers tell quite a story! Our Clinic performed 1,361 surgeries, examined more than 2,100 pets, and administered almost 2,200 vaccines throughout the month. Up at the Adoption Center, 108 animals found their new homes!

And in true 2026 fashion, Saleeba’s Store of Hope broke another record. 1,104 pets were served at the pet food pantry in September, continuing a year of record-breaking need month after month. We’re incredibly grateful for the donations and support that allow us to keep their shelves stocked!

Here’s to October!
