Angels of Assisi

Angels of Assisi Changing the definition of an animal shelter by offering services to benefit the community’s pets and the people who love them.

Community Pet Clinic: Mon-Sat 8:30am-6pm
Adoption Center: Daily 12-6pm

Help is here. Angels of Assisi is changing the role of an animal shelter to include resources, programs, and services to benefit the pets in our communities and the people who love them. We are an independent, nonprofit animal welfare organization serving Southwest Virginia and West Virginia. Along with our Adoption Center and

Farm Sanctuary, we offer a Community Pet Clinic, Rural Veterinary Care, Cruelty Investigations, Disaster Response, and a Safety Net Program for those needing temporary help due to domestic violence or emergency situations.

This morning, we loaded up around 40 bags of pet food from Saleeba’s Store of Hope, and our amazing volunteer Keith hit the road to deliver it to Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association. The food will help local families who have lost so much in the recent devastating floods. We hope it can provide one less thing to worry about as they care for their beloved pets and get back on their feet.

A big thank you to Saleeba's Liz and Cliff for loading up the truck, to Keith for making the drive, and to the four wonderful KCHA ladies who helped unload everything when he arrived. We’re grateful to play a small part in helping our neighbors and their pets during such a difficult time.

Foster needed for our special girl, Violet! At just 4 years old, Violet has already been through a lot, and we’d love to give her the comfort and TLC of a foster home while she continues to heal. Violet is recovering from a severe case of mange (not contagious) and also struggles with allergies. She’s made progress, but we think a comfortable home could be just what she needs for her skin to heal and get her feeling her best again.

She is a gentle, sweet girl who can be extremely shy at first, but treats are a quick way to her heart. Violet needs a patient, kind person who will let her take things at her own pace and help her learn that she is safe and loved. She is house-trained and crate-trained and has done well around smaller dogs and cats. Though while her skin continues to heal, we think a calmer home would be the best fit.

If you can open your home to Violet and give her a comfortable place to hang, please reach out to [email protected] or stop by our Adoption Center to meet her today.

Peepers is a beautiful queen who simply needs a throne! She would be the perfect addition to a home who isn't too worried about snuggles (at first, at least! She just may warm up to a special someone 🥰). During the month of August for Clear the Shelters, you can adopt Peepers for just $50!

Need more drama in your life? Looking for a heavily opinionated feline companion? Peepers may be the perfect fit for you! She has been at Angels of Assisi for almost 300 days and is their longest cat resident currently.

It’s Starlight and Laika’s turn to find their homes! 🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛ Earlier this summer, these beautiful black kittens were found outside with two other kitties. All four have Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH), also known as “wobbly cat syndrome,” a non-progressive neurological condition that affects their balance and coordination, but certainly not their cuteness. Two of their siblings have already found wonderful homes and now it’s Starlight and Laika’s turn.

Despite their wobbles, these sweet 12-week-old girls get around well, are able to use the litter box, play, explore, cuddle, and do all the normal kitten things. They’ve been thriving in a foster home, so they’re already comfortable with home life and would settle in quickly with a new family.

Starlight and Laika don’t have to be adopted together...but we think a home with double the wobble could be pretty adorable. 😉 They’ve both been spayed, microchipped, and are up to date on vaccines. Stop by our Adoption Center to meet them!

"A yearly update for our adopted boy Walker, formerly known as Norman. We adopted him back in April of 2025, and since then he has become such a lover. He lives with his two doggy sisters and they are all very bonded. His favorite things in this world is close up face-to-face affection, watermelon, whipped cream, mealtime, hugs, and his dog beds. He’s also a morning bird and is always the first to be up.

"He has come such a long way since his shelter days, and we adore him and his sweet face. We’re thankful we were able to give him the home and family he deserved. 🤍" 🏡

❤️ Courtesy post ❤️ A Cancer and Heart Attack Survivor's Final Wish: Save Her 11 Sanctuary Cats
For years, an extraordinary 80-year-old woman has quietly cared for 11 of the most vulnerable cats in our community. These aren't cuddly house cats at the moment. They're independent, unsocialized cats who found safety under her roof when they had nowhere else to go.

Over the past two years, she battled cancer and survived two heart attacks, never letting her own health stop her from caring for the cats. Recently everything changed. She suffered a severe fall, broke her hip, and can no longer return home. Her greatest worry isn't herself, it's the cats she loves.

Because these cats aren't suited for traditional homes, they're ideal working cats for barns, workshops, warehouses, or rural properties where they can live safely on their own terms while providing natural pest control.

We're urgently asking barn owners, rural property owners, and working-cat rescue organizations to help. Whether you can take one, a pair, or a small group, you'll be helping fulfill the final wish of a woman who devoted years to giving these cats a safe place to belong.

Please help us honor her compassion by giving these cats a second chance and reach out to Jacquelyn LaRue at (434) 665- 0314 or [email protected]

July was our biggest month of 2026 for exams, surgeries, and adoptions! We also reached an incredible milestone at Saleeba's Pet Food Pantry, serving more than 1,000 pets in a single month for the first time ever!

Thank you for making a record-breaking July possible. We can't wait to keep the momentum going and help even more pets and people this month!

Some of the most meaningful stories happen through our Forever Foster program. These incredible people open their homes to senior pets who deserve to spend their final months or years surrounded by love . Recently, Carol welcomed 15-year-old Jericho into her home. Though he was only with her for five weeks before he passed, those weeks were filled with the comfort, kindness, and love every animal deserves.

Here's Carol's story in her own words:

"One day, I visited AoA's website and noticed their Forever Foster program, where a 15-year-old beagle named Jericho caught my eye. I thought it was a great opportunity to try having a dog, when I've only had experience with cats so far, and it broke my heart to know he wasn't in a home for his golden years.

"Time with Jericho was precious to me. AoA told me Jericho must have had a lousy life before this. But we got to see Jericho's personality shine; we enjoyed every moment we had together. He was so surprised when he first watched TV; he was so excited to try chicken breast, steak, and salmon. He came to my bed to check on me every night and waited for me in the bathroom when I woke up. He wanted to be petted all the time. He always wanted to walk further and pretended to be sad if I wouldn't let him.

"It wasn't always an easy journey, and I appreciate AoA a lot as they were there with me through the whole thing, and all the support they provided Jericho to make sure his last days were comfortable and loved. I decided to be a monthly donor as I know they are doing meaningful and amazing things for animals. Even though I can’t donate more now that I'm just a student, I hope the love for Jericho can be carried further."

Thank you, Carol, for giving Jericho the peaceful, loving home he deserved and for continuing to help animals through your generosity as an Assisi Advocate. You have truly made a difference.

If you'd like to become a Forever Foster, we currently have a few dogs and cats looking for their happy golden years. Please email [email protected] to learn more.

Meet our August Angel of the Month, Sarah! Sarah is an invaluable member of our surgery team, making sure every pet wakes up from their procedure safely and with plenty of TLC. She carefully monitors each patient as they recover, keeping them warm and calm during those first groggy moments. Sarah loves all animals and her compassion shines through in everything she does.
