Ridgefield Historical Society preserves & fosters knowledge about the remarkable history of Ridgefield, CT.

The Ridgefield Historical Society meets our mission by the growth and sharing of our expansive collections; and through a wide range of programs and events which highlight our heritage and keep it alive and well. As of March 2022, we are open to visitors on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. We look forward to expanding these hours as the days lengthen, the temperatures rise, and the shadow of the pandemic continues to lift.

We closed out a wonderful and educational season welcoming families into the Peter Parley Schoolhouse with a festive last Sunday!

Children visited the school in costume and sat at vintage desks, played with antique toys, and learned about old Ridgefield!

The schoolhouse will be open again in May!

Last Sundays at the Schoolhouse are done for another year. We're thankful to our neighbors for their cheerful support and to all the visitors who took time to enjoy the West Lane District/Peter Parley Schoolhouse this year. And we're thankful for the continuing Gateway Project work that has brightened up the schoolhouse and its surroundings.

Our October open house is always a pre-Halloween celebration and we had some wonderful guests in costume, including this mini version of Hank Williams (he'd forgotten his guitar, but still had great "presence").

Last Sundays at the Schoolhouse will resume next May 30; hope to see you then! ridgefieldhistoricalsociety.org

This weekend we were honored to welcome The National Society of Washington Family Descendents to Ridgefield for a special exploration of our town’s Revolutionary War history.

Historian Keith Jones presented a lecture on the Battle of Ridgefield, followed by a guided battlefield walking tour along Main Street, bringing the events of 1777 to life.

A meaningful opportunity to connect generations of American history right here in Ridgefield!

The season of ghosts and goblins is upon us. Who knows what spirits might return to the West Lane District/Peter Parley Schoolhouse? Its current caretakers have never encountered a ghost there, but they do have a story of a past "trick" that changed the school.

We'll be open on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 25, from 1 to 4 and invite visitors to come in costume -- there will be treats!

The school, operated by the Ridgefield Historical Society as a small museum, is at the intersection of West Lane, Silver Spring Road, and South Salem Road. Town Historian Jack Sanders, one of the school's caretakers, will be on hand. For more information, visit ridgefieldhistoricalsociety.org.

The Ridgefield History Club meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 10 a.m. at the Ridgefield Historical Society, 4 Sunset Lane, will feature Town Historian Jack Sanders presenting Ridgefield Then and Now, Part II. See scenes from yesterday's Ridgefield and learn how change has occurred along Main Street and in other parts of town.
The free program is open to everyone from newcomers to natives; it's an informal discussion and questions and comments are invited.
