Doug Hexel admits he was probably the most complained-about instructor in his paramedic program.

His students would run a scenario perfectly. Then he’d kill the patient anyway.

“What did I do wrong?”

Nothing. That was the lesson.

Years later, those same students come back and thank him. The lesson comes for everyone, and Doug wanted them to learn it in a classroom, not alone at 3 a.m. wondering if they were the problem.

Nearly ten years ago, Asst. Chief Jason Corthell and his team set out to build a wellness program with no template to copy. They started with three services: chaplaincy, peer support, and professional counseling.

The fire chief at the time took some convincing. Today he’s the program’s biggest advocate.

Jason has spoken at conferences across the country, and he sees the same thing everywhere: a motivated firefighter, lieutenant, or captain begging to start something, and getting shut down.

His message to chief officers: “The cost is mainly in time. It’s not a huge financial burden.”

He told a room of first responders that men are generally more closed off than women.

On his break, a female police officer set him straight: “Women first responders tend to be more closed off than men. They can’t show any more weakness than what’s already been painted on them.”

Asst. Chief Jason Corthell didn’t argue. It’s in his slides now, and he shares it everywhere he speaks.
