“Science, costs, and people—these forces all had to balance for medicine to succeed. The more I encountered patients without access to basic care, the more I realized that, in many cases, costs had become the dominant force shaping outcomes. The people part of medicine had taken a back seat; even science was playing defense, since widely available treatments weren’t being delivered to those who needed them.”

Learning to be a physician, I realized over and over again that I was seeing only part of the picture.
