We are honored and excited to be sharing our film about families and recovery at the Virginia Recovery Conference next week! If you're attending the conference, please join us for ice cream sundaes and a film that is not only changing hearts and minds but having a deep impact on family systems across the country.

Next week, at the Virginia Recovery Conference in Roanoke, attendees will get a special screening of the award-winning documentary "Together: Family Recovery."

This powerful, intimate film redefines what recovery can look like — through the lens of family. Attendees will also get a preview of the film's companion guide and a live Q&A with the film's Co-Producer and Co-Director, Shelly Young, Executive Director of Illume Family Recovery, Incorporated.

On Wednesday Kathy, Sarah & Shelly were thrilled to present alongside VCU School of Social Work Researchers, Larkin & Ya-Li on the impact our film has had on family members and their relationships to their loved ones this past year. We are grateful for the opportunity to share the film's origin story and why we chose storytelling and the research and data that family bonds matter in recovery and that tough love is out and connection based models are in.
Documentary storytelling is an evidence based tool for change. Media researchers say, "documentaries profoundly change behaviors of individual views and then those viewers create new cultural outputs like articles, curricula and laws which ripple out globally."

Family Recovery is like the game of golf. It's a game of intention and practice. You drive the ball down the fairway with a well practiced swing, then choose the best club to get on the green, putt and meet your goal. In the same fashion, maybe your intention is to regulate yourself/your nervous system so you can feel a sense of grounding or have a difficult conversation that influences change. You choose the best tool to settle your nervous system, maybe its 4 part breathing or taking a walk to release some frantic energy. You feel at ease, your body is calm, your mind is calm. You approach your loved one with patience, consideration and care. You meet the goal to communicate and connect.
