Sanctuary Rescue

Sanctuary Rescue Saving shelter dogs one puppy at a time. We are a small, foster-based animal rescue located in Midlothian, Virginia.

We consist of dedicated animal lovers who open our homes to foster those that have been left behind. We pull our dogs from high-kill shelters where they would otherwise not stand a chance. We "specialize" in saving pregnant and nursing mama dogs and orphaned puppies who are especially vulnerable in shelters. But we certainly don't discriminate and also save adult dogs looking for a new life as wel

l. All of our dogs are fostered in a home environment, many times with other dogs and children. We try to teach them all what it is like to be loved, to learn good doggie manners and to become well- socialized.

Sometimes you go to the shelter on a rainy Saturday to grab a couple of fat potatoes but see a couple of shaky tinies while you’re there and ask yourself, “Why not?” It’s spontaneous and there is no plan for additional shaky tinies so you throw them in a kennel while you try to figure out what to do with your impromptu miniature hitchhikers not bargaining for the fact that they are so incredibly microscopic that they just can just wiggle through the bars of the kennel. And you wouldn’t be a true rescuer if you didn’t say, “Hey, just keep her like that for a second while I get a quick picture.”

*No shaky tinies were harmed in the making of this true story/photo op

I’ve heard from multiple people over the past week that they think that Sanctuary Rescue is closing. Absolutely not. We’re still rocking and rolling as always. Just our adoption store at Westchester is closing. Why? Well, it was always meant to a pop-up. We were doing so well that we extended a few months, but even then we knew it was going to be temporary. We have had a lot of fun and a lot of success, but at the end of the day there just never seems to be enough time or manpower to get it all done, and the rescue will always be our main priority. The store has been amazing and helped 130 dogs (and a couple of cats) find their families. We’ve enjoyed meeting all the people that have come through and told us their stories. We’re definitely going to miss our regulars. So many regulars! Thanks to everyone that was part of the magic for the last six months. Come visit us one last time today! We’ll be there until 8 pm with 50% off merchandise and some adorable adoptables like this guy, Taxi. See ya there.

On the one hand, it was pure chaos with 130 interviews today. On the other hand it was one of my favorite days meeting so many new people that all have a passion for animals. Thank you to everyone that came out today and despite parking pandemonium and long waits, were all so delightful and engaging. Here’s a cute dog as payment for your patience.

A reminder about tomorrow…

SANCTUARY RESCUE IS HIRING!!
Between all of our community programs, dozens and dozens (and dozens) of dogs, the clinics, the events, and all of the other rescue responsibilities we are currently juggling, we are swamped, exhausted, and spread a little too thin. We need a few extra paws (get it) to help us continue to save animals and be awesome.
We are looking to fill two part-time positions - or if the perfect magical person that would be great at all things appears, it could be one full-time position. We simply don’t have any extra time to go through hundreds of applications, so we’re just going to open our doors for a day of open interviews: Thursday, May 21, from 12 noon to 7 PM at Liz’s Place Rescue Resource Center, 16916 Hull Street Road, Moseley, Va. stop by anytime between noon and 7 pm next Thursday, just bring a resume with you, and we’ll chat about both of our needs.
This is what we’re looking for:
1) Part-time Admin Assistant 20-25 hours a week Tuesday-Saturday, $25 an hour. We are looking for someone that is a self-starter, able to accomplish tasks without much oversight/micromanaging, proactive, friendly, great communication skills both oral and written, great sense of humor, moderately tech savvy, knowledgeable with Google Workspace, lots of good energy and good vibes. This position will encompass all things office work.
2) Part-Time Animal Enrichment Officer 20-25 hours a week, Tuesday through Saturday, $25 an hour. This will require animal handling - mostly dogs, occasionally cats, and not so occasionally a loud, mean, judgy cockatoo. You will make sure animals in our program are happy, healthy, and clean. Must love dogs and have dog handling experience on some level. If you want to just put on headphones and not deal with people and smooch wrinkly potatoes instead, this is perfect. This position is physical in nature; there’s cleaning, organizing, laundry, dog walks, event setup, etc.

In full transparency, we don’t have the bandwidth to field emails and calls and questions and messages about these positions right now - that’s what we need you for - so if you’re interested or think you’d be a great fit, just stop by Thursday, May 21 between 12 and 7 pm and ask us your questions then.

Pic of your future coworkers for attention.

Poor Danbury, he’s so exhausted from waiting for his family to find him. He’s been a good boy, waiting patiently, making appearances at the store, learning manners, and working hard on his potty training, and somehow he’s the very last one left from his litter.
We never met his parents, so your guess is as good as ours as to breed mix, but we know he’s a medium-sized, happy, healthy boy that LOVES being outside soaking up the sun and playing and wrestling with his furry foster siblings. Danbury is a funny, friendly, five-month-old fellow that will make a great best friend. This puppy is too special to be growing up in rescue. We’ll put his adoption listing in the comments so you can check him out and send in an app.

Hey, Hey, It’s Caturday!
Chickie Nuggie, our three-week-old cleftie kitty, is filing a complaint on the right. On the left is yet unnamed orphaned kitty that we snatched up from our friends at Amelia Animal Shelter - Virginia this week so Chickie Nuggie could have a bestie to grow up with. Maybe he/she is our Dipping Sauce!
(Pretty blue-eyed maniac is foster mom, mind ya business!)
