Memorial Day is more than the start of summer—it is a time to reflect on the cost of our freedoms and to express our deepest gratitude to those who gave their lives to protect them.

As Rotarians, we are committed to service above self, and today we pause to recognize those who embodied that principle in its highest form.

We encourage our community to take a moment today to remember, reflect, and honor our fallen heroes.

What an incredible day at Goochland Day 2026! 🇺🇸🎉

Members of the Rotary Club of Goochland were proud to be part of this amazing community tradition—volunteering, celebrating, and connecting with so many familiar and new faces throughout the day. From the parade to the festival, it was truly a celebration of what makes Goochland so special.

A highlight of the parade was the recognition of Chief Robin Hillman, our Past President and fellow Rotarian, who was honored as “Mayor of the Day.” We’re also proud of Past President John Aaron, who represented Rotary by presenting community awards and leading the Pledge of Allegiance—an inspiring example of Service Above Self in action.

We’re especially grateful to be part of the Goochland Day Community Planning Team, working alongside incredible partners to help bring this event to life for our community.

Thank you to everyone who made this day possible—from organizers and volunteers to sponsors, vendors, and attendees. Goochland Day continues to be a powerful reminder of the impact we can make when we come together.

Ever wonder how roads get fixed, traffic patterns are studied, or new transportation projects come to life?

Today, we recently had the opportunity to learn more about the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the critical role they play in our community—from pothole repairs and snow removal to long-term planning and major roadway improvements.

VDOT works closely with local governments and residents to keep our transportation system safe, efficient, and ready for future growth.

Have a concern like a pothole or traffic issue? You can report it directly to VDOT and help keep our roads in top shape!

Today, the Rotary Club of Goochland had the privilege of hearing an inspiring presentation on St. Mary’s Vision Trip to Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda—and the life-changing impact of clean water initiatives. 💧

Access to clean water is something many of us take for granted, but for communities around the world, it means everything: better health, stronger schools, and brighter futures.

One of the most powerful moments shared was the ribbon-cutting for a new water sanitation system at Gilgal School in Motosiet this past March. What may seem like a simple project is truly transformational—bringing hope, dignity, and opportunity to students and families.

This is what “Service Above Self” looks like in action.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to learn, reflect, and be reminded that even from our local community, we can be part of global change. 🌍

On May 1st, we had the pleasure of hearing from the Goochland County High School ROTC Program! 🇺🇸

It was inspiring to learn about the impactful work being done with students—building leadership skills, discipline, and a strong sense of service within the Goochland High School community. The program is clearly shaping future leaders and making a meaningful difference.
