Our next recipient in the Community Beautification category is Swansboro Community Garden, a volunteer organization run by members of Swansboro Baptist Church in Richmond. The garden, located behind the church, contains a greenhouse, 18 raised beds, and a large hoop house that previously housed chickens. The group will use the $1,000 in funding to renovate the hoop house, turning it into a space that will host educational workshops, children and youth programming, and provide a home for plants to grow year-round. With the Green Grant, the Swansboro Community Garden can invest in a space that will offer an inclusive, welcoming environment where people can learn gardening skills and find respite within the City of Richmond.

We are happy to announce that Scott County Litter Control has been awarded $1,000 in the Litter Prevention category. This County Department is staffed by a single, full-time Litter Control Officer responsible for over 500 square miles of rural territory. The Green Grant will help support the Officer’s educational outreach to elementary schools in Scott County. Funds will go toward purchasing litter grabbers and gloves for school cleanups, as well as a large banner students can display at their school to celebrate and promote their environmental stewardship. We are eager to support this project that will help students in Scott County take action to make their community beautiful!

Congratulations to Holy Transfiguration Melkite Greek Catholic Church in McLean for receiving $1,000 in the Recycling and Waste Reduction category! The Church will use the Green Grant to further its efforts to recycle and compost during church-sponsored events, including its annual Middle Eastern Food Festival held on Labor Day weekend. Funds will go toward purchasing several bins for recycling and compost, instructional signage, and compostable trash bags. We are grateful to support the Church’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.

Our local Keep America Beautiful affiliate, Keep Hopewell Beautiful, has been awarded $500 in the Environmental Education category! The group will use the funds to support the Growing Minds & Healthy Communities initiative at Woodlawn Learning Center, where the City of Hopewell’s Head Start program is located. Elevated beds for pollinator plants and vegetables will be installed outside of the Woodlawn Learning Center, and students will participate in the planting and maintenance. We are hopeful this Green Grant will foster curiosity and love for our environment and local food systems!

A group of Virginia Tech graduate students has been awarded $750 in the Community Beautification category. The group is affiliated with the The Global Change Center at Virginia Tech. The Global Change Center brings together faculty and students from across the globe to research and develop science-based solutions that inform actions and policy. With the Green Grant, the Virginia Tech students will design and install a therapeutic, native plant garden at Warm Hearth Village, a senior community in Blacksburg. The primary goals of the garden are to enhance resident well-being and support native habitat. We are inspired by this project that will benefit both the local ecosystem and residents at Warm Hearth Village!

Congratulations to Four Mile Run Conservancy for receiving $1,000 in the Litter Prevention category! The nonprofit based in Alexandria works to protect and restore Four Mile Run, a 9.4-mile long stream that runs through Alexandria and Arlington County. The group will use the funding to purchase necessary supplies for their kayak litter cleanups this summer. We are grateful to support this project that will contribute to a thriving Virginia waterway.

Sustain Abingdon, a committee of the Town of Abingdon, Virginia, has been awarded $1,000 in the Recycling and Waste Reduction category! Sustain Abingdon will use the funding to create a permanent, public recycling station within Town limits. By developing a well-designed and clearly marked recycling station, the Town aims to increase recycling, waste reduction, and community cleanliness. Our next recipient in the Community Beautification category is Farmville Downtown Partnership. The group will use the $1,000 in funding to create an interactive public art space at the High Bridge Caboose Plaza—a beloved local landmark and gateway for trail visitors. The space will include a mural, interactive checkers, a meditation maze, and other artistic features. We are pleased to support this beautification project that will help to revitalize downtown Farmville!

The Friends group will use the funding to purchase learning materials for its ranger-led programs—“Birding for Beginners” and “C.S.I.: Creek Scene Investigation.” With the Green Grant, Friends of Fairy Stone State Park will be able to expand access to high-quality nature education for youth and their families.
