Efforts to understand the true scope of the recent executive order moving around 8,000 career federal jobs into Schedule Policy/Career, making their incumbents effectively at-will employees, have been stymied by the administration’s scant public documentation.

An arbitrator ordered the IRS to restore telework for NTEU represented employees—another in a series of arbitration wins against agencies stripping telework and remote work rights. Even the IRS’s own Inspector General found that chatbots can’t match the accuracy of real IRS employees. So, it’s no surprise the IRS is now asking to hire 8,000 more workers after reckless staffing cuts did real damage. Turns out, public service still needs people.
