As a former union member, it was an honor to meet with labor leaders today and discuss how my office can work alongside them to protect Virginia workers and hold bad actors accountable. Together, we can chart a path forward where workers and businesses can thrive.

💡 Did you know? Virginia’s Payment of Wage Unit investigates complaints related to unpaid wages under state law.

These cases can be resolved informally or through formal action. When employers fail to comply, the Division may issue final orders for wages, assess civil penalties, and in some cases pursue criminal action to ensure compliance.

Understanding your rights is important and protections are in place to help workers receive the pay they’ve earned.

A “salt” is a worker who gets a job in order to organize their workplace. Salting is a long-standing tactic of labor activists who seek to spark organizing from the shop floor. The resurgence in salting comes at a time when a historically low proportion of US workers are represented by unions—just 11.2 percent in 2025.

The economic and political headwinds that threaten worker power, from automation to corporate consolidation to gig work, make organizing for fair wages and safe conditions more critical than ever. Salts can provide kindling for a unionization fight, but their goal is to make themselves replaceable by developing their coworkers’ organizing abilities.

Recruiting and supporting salts has always required a delicate balance between secrecy (to avoid tipping off employers) and accessibility (to find the activists willing to commit their working lives to organizing). Find out more about the people behind the underground movement to spark union organizing from the inside. Read more from Ella Fanger: https://www.thenation.com/article/society/the-salt-revival/
