Sisters ,please get screened and educate yourselves. President Manning's wife Amy is willing to share her breast cancer journey and answer any questions you may have. Brothers please encourage your spouses to get screened. As a reminder male breast cancer is also possible and a couple of our department Brothers have had to deal with it over the years . Cancer should be taken seriously because our careers put us all at increased risk.

For , breast cancer is an occupational risk. One study found a 46% increase in breast cancer among female fire fighters compared with the general population.*

This month, members are wearing pink to raise awareness and support those affected by breast cancer.

Yet another example of how more can get accomplished working together than not. In Newport News we are also lucky to have a great working relationship with Chief Rogers and City Manager Alan Archer to accomplish goals of meeting needs of our citizens and department members.

A Step Forward

Today, IAFF Local 2801 met with City Manager Kevin Hughes and Fire Chief Mike Barakey in a formal meeting to discuss the Fire Department, the City, staffing, the ongoing pay and compensation study, and the broader challenges we face: internally, externally, regionally, and professionally.

This meeting was about more than any single issue. It was about establishing a relationship, seeking understanding, and beginning the work of solving complex, long-standing problems together.

We see this as the first of what we hope will be an ongoing conversation, one that continues as the pay and compensation study works through its process, as planning and projections take shape, and as the real questions our members are asking start to get real answers.

We want to thank City Manager Hughes and Chief Barakey for the opportunity to sit down, find common ground, and begin working toward real solutions. We also want to thank the members of City Council and the staff within our city government who have taken the time to listen, ask real questions, and advocate for the women and men of this Fire Department. That support has not gone unnoticed, and it matters.

We recognize there are real hurdles ahead, and real work still to do. We also recognize the value of a City Manager willing to take the time, communicate his vision, and look for a path forward that works for everyone involved. We thank him for that.

Local 2801 remains determined to advocate for the needs of our members, and for the staffing and response capabilities the citizens of Suffolk deserve and need.

Today was a step. We look forward to building on it, and to the relationships still ahead.

“Richmond Professional Firefighter’s Association, IAFF Local 995 is pleased to announce in cooperation with Mayor Avula, CAO Donald, RFD Fire Chief Segal, Councilmembers Dr. Newbille, Reva Trammell, and Sarah Abubaker, that the Richmond Fire Department is back to our 118 safe staffing level. This decision brings RFD to our 100% operational strength of having four firefighters on each fire truck in the City of Richmond each day. We couldn’t do this without the Citizens of Richmond, your hard earned tax dollars are a precious commodity. We are honored to have your trust. With the adoption of our collective bargaining ordinance by City Council on July 25th, 2022, the employee/ employer relationship is the strongest it’s ever been. We hope the City of Richmond can be the example for other jurisdictions to mirror as they continue their path for statewide public sector collective bargaining legislation.
