The Educational Goals and Objectives for this webinar are to:
1) Increase awareness of the importance of addressing co-occurring ni****ne addiction in patients who are treating for other substance use disorders
2) Increase familiarity with effective treatment interventions for ni****ne addiction
3) Clarify similarities and differences between ni****ne products

Abstract: Ni****ne addiction frequently co-occurs with other substance use disorders but treatment for it is often deferred indefinitely. Unsurprisingly, diseases related to to***co use are the most common cause of death for people in recovery from other SUDs. Recent studies indicate that stopping ni****ne use reduces the likelihood of relapse on other substances, despite the entrenched belief to the contrary in the recovery support community.

Pessimism about treatment resistance and poor treatment outcomes can discourage clinicians from addressing ni****ne use in their patients. This presentation aims to reduce this pessimism by describing a newer “opt out” approach to motivating patients instead of the traditional “5 A’s”. Clinical interventions consistent with traditional addiction treatment will be described instead of standard “smoking cessation” strategies that have yielded disappointing outcomes. Controversies relating to comparing to***co ci******es with to***co-free forms of ni****ne will be discussed.
