At Tzu Chi USA in Reston, Virginia, a local Scout noticed two garden beds overgrown with weeds and sitting mostly unused. What started as a simple observation grew into his Eagle Scout project: transforming those beds into renewed spaces that can serve the community once again.

🛠️ Planned and led from start to finish: Eagle Scout projects require Scouts to take on a large service project and manage the entire process, building real leadership skills along the way.

🤝 Powered by community support: Donations from local organizations made the renovation possible.

"I wouldn't have been able to do any of this without donations from a lot of different organizations. So for that, I'm really glad."

Projects like this show how initiative and teamwork can turn a small idea into meaningful action, and how young people can create spaces that continue to grow, serve, and inspire. 💚

On Saturday, August 1, the Tzu Chi Washington D.C. Chapter held its first food distribution of the month, one of the chapter's longstanding twice-monthly outreach programs. Families began arriving early and lining up at the service center, and by the time distribution wrapped up at 11:30 a.m., 207 families had received much-needed support.

Each household received about 70 pounds of groceries, including 30 pounds of pantry staples like rice, noodles, black beans, peanut oil, canned corn, milk, juice, and cereal, plus a 40-pound bag of fresh produce such as corn, cantaloupe or watermelon, green peppers, cucumbers, strawberries, and soy milk: a nutritious, well-rounded selection to support every family's table.

But beyond the groceries, volunteers greeted each family with warm smiles, sincere respect, and heartfelt blessings, reminding everyone that they are seen, valued, and cared for.

After the distribution, volunteers gathered for a group photo in front of the newly completed crevice garden, built by local Scouts just one week earlier. The fresh landscaping brought new life to the service center and stood as a beautiful symbol of teamwork, community service, and shared goodwill.

What does 60 years of compassion inspire in a community?

At our Tzu Chi Washington DC Region Office in Reston, VA, volunteers, community leaders, public officials, American Red Cross representatives, and longtime partners came together to celebrate the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation's 60th anniversary and the relationships that have strengthened compassionate service throughout Northern Virginia.

The event was an opportunity to reflect on how a mission that began with ordinary people setting aside a small daily donation has grown into a worldwide humanitarian movement. While Tzu Chi's reach has expanded across the globe, its guiding principle remains the same: transforming compassion into meaningful action that uplifts lives and brings communities together.

Here's to 60 years of serving with gratitude, love, and hope, and to the many lives still to be touched.

This past weekend, we joined hands and hearts with the community for a triple celebration honoring Buddha Day, Mother’s Day, and Tzu Chi Day. 💐🙏❤️

This year’s gathering carried special meaning, too, as we also celebrated Tzu Chi’s 60th Anniversary, marking six decades of compassion, humanitarian relief, and service.

Families, volunteers, and neighbors gathered in gratitude to offer prayers for peace and reflect on the spirit of kindness and unity that connects us all. And indeed, throughout the celebration, moments of reflection and heartfelt appreciation abounded, filling the air with warmth and sincerity. May there be peace in our hearts, and blessings for all beings.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this meaningful occasion truly memorable!
