Court Reminders Work!

Court reminders improve efficiency, reduce unnecessary jail cycles, and help the justice system focus detention resources on higher-risk cases.

Court Reminders are broadly popular in NC. Polling by the NC Chamber of Commerce showed that an overwhelming majority of North Carolinians support court reminders. We were told - we couldn’t get apple pie to poll as well as reminding people to go to court! 🥧🍎

We all have a million things to remember every day. Let’s take court off our plates!

How do court reminders help keep us safe?

When jails and courts are overwhelmed by low-level FTAs, resources are pulled away from more serious public safety priorities.

Even when someone is only in jail for a few hours or overnight, the system still has to process, transport, supervise, and release them. When this happens thousands of times for missed low-level court dates, it puts pressure on jails and pulls resources away from more serious public safety needs.

Missed hearings cost everyone — courts, law enforcement, taxpayers, and families already struggling financially.

EACH missed court dates costs North Carolina Judicial Branch $1,500 and costs the defendant $1,400 per missed appearance.

For many people, losing a license means losing access to work, school, childcare, and medical appointments — all over low-level offenses unrelated to public safety.

Missing court often triggers a Failure to Appear (FTA) charge and automatic driver’s license suspension.
