Warren County Radio Club is helping out with a trail running race on Saturday, October 3rd. It is the Buck 50K Trail Running Race. It starts at Camp Chingachgook and goes up over Buck, Sleeping Beauty, Erebus, and to the summit of Black Mountain before turning and heading back to the start over all the mountains again. Our role is primarily emergency communications, but we are also there to support the runners passing us.
I am in need of hikers who are also Ham Radio operators to assist. I do not have any operators for the summit of Buck Mountain, Sleeping Beauty, or Erebus yet. The race starts at 6:30AM and the official end time is 6:30PM. We welcome any help, even if you can only commit to a half day at a location. We need the radio operator set up before the runners arrive at those locations so it might require an early morning hike into the woods, or a after dark hike out of the woods. Operators can sign off once the sweep team reaches the next checkpoint, in case the sweep needs to reverse direction along the route to seek assistance.
Last year there were about 35 runners so it is a relatively easy day, even though it is long. When not tracking runners, you will be able to do a SOTA or POTA.
If you are able to take part in the race, please let me know, and also sign up on the club website: https://www.w2wcr.org/events/buck-50-race
I know several of us will be camping out at the start/finish line Friday night, as well as several operators camping in in the wilderness. I will put together a list detailing when each position should plan to be set up so people can judge when they want to hike into their locations for the people that sign up.
Also, if you know any other operators who are hikers and might be willing to help, please have them contact me so I can give them the details. The positions I see as most important to fill are the ones for which I haven't found anyone yet.
Thank you,
