There’s a lot to learn when people come together for conversations about what it takes to build a food system that reflects the communities it serves.

Angel, Mikel, and Kelsey recently traveled to Lewiston, Auburn, and Portland at the invitation of the Maine Immigrants' Rights Coalition which is exploring the development of a culturally relevant food hub.

The trip was a chance to share knowledge, build relationships, and learn from the strong groundwork and collaboration already happening behind the scenes. We came away encouraged by how much thoughtful work is already in motion and grateful for the opportunity to exchange ideas and learn from one another.

Strong food systems start with strong relationships.

Josh Morgenthau returned to Fishkill Farms with a pretty clear idea of what sustainable apple growing should look like, but pests, disease, weather, and real-world farming decisions had other ideas.

Our latest blog post featuring his essay, The Secret Life of Fruit: Moving Beyond Organic, shares what changed his thinking and why sustainability doesn’t always fit neatly into one label.

Sometimes you have to get out of the inbox and into the field. 🌽 Our visit to Twin Oaks Farm with our partners from PFG gave us a chance to walk the crops with fourth-generation farmer Joe Matuszko, who showed us around, talked about how the season is shaping up, and shared what the farm is seeing on the ground. That kind of time on the farm helps us better understand what’s available, what growers are navigating, and where we can help connect their harvest with new opportunities.

We might have different definitions of “going out”. 👀

Ours usually involve muddy boots, apple cider tastings and harvest windows. Spending time with growers helps us understand the crop, the season, and what’s happening on the ground, because stronger grower-to-market connections start at the farm. 💅🏼

We came, we saw, we brought the peaches. 🍑

Alessandra & Michelle had a blast celebrating with Co-op Partners Warehouse at Bang Brewing surrounded by an incredible crew of customers, growers, makers and food folks.

Showing up empty handed isn’t really our style, so you know we had to rep those delicious Midwest Family-Owned Orchard peaches. It’s safe to say that the people were pleased.

Big thanks to Co-Op Partners Warehouse for bringing the party and throwing such a fun celebration! We can’t wait to go back.

Why do farmers markets matter to Red Tomato?

Because they put relationships at the center of our food system, connecting farmers, families, neighbors, and community organizations.

They strengthen local economies, expand access to fresh food, and help more people understand where their food comes from.

This National Farmers Market Week, we invite you to visit your local market, meet your farmers, and celebrate the communities growing a better food future.
