One month into the school year, and local farms have been busy. 🍎

Through our Farm to School work, students have received 37,180 pounds of fresh apples, pears, peaches, and lettuce. And there’s something new in the mix: our EcoCertified™ sliced apples are now in production and available to schools, with 4,125lbs delivered in the first month!

The sliced apples connect regional orchards with processors and school food providers, making local fruit easier to serve while creating another market for growers.

Michelle and Alessandra snuck away to visit Riamede Farm, our first official EcoCertified orchard in New Jersey! 🍎

We met farm owner Ashley and farm manager Jamie, who run the farm as a two-person team. Once you see everything they do, “two-person team” feels almost impossible.

We tried a frozen drink called the “Freeze Warning,” a name Jamie’s wife helped come up with. It’s a little comic relief after the April freeze that hit their blossoms. The drink may have started with some dark humor, but the mixture of frozen apple c***r with vanilla soft serve topped with whipped cream could make anyone forget their troubles.

As we toured the orchard with Ashley’s 5-year-old son Oliver helping to guide the way, we couldn’t help but notice how much Ashley and Jamie care for their land, its pollinators and soil, and their community. Every detail of their pick-your-own operation is made with their visitors in mind, with unique touches like the apple slingshot, a weekend b**r garden, live music and pony rides.

Ashley and Jamie are excited to officially join the EcoCertified grower network, and we’re so glad they’re here. Give Riamede a visit if you’re in New Jersey, just an hour outside of the city! 🍎
