The Steel Yard offers arts and technical training programs for the local PVD community.

The Steel Yard is an award-winning industrial arts center, a manufacturer of custom and functional public-art, a craft school and shared studio, and Providence's most unique private outdoor venue.

Fab is short for fabrication. It's studio slang for making things with metal.

Fab is also short for fabulous. As in stellar, awesome, prime, fine, fantastic.

Fab Night is tomorrow night, and these evenings are, indeed, fine. Superb. Wonderful. Divine, even.

Sylvie says come down to Sims Ave. tomorrow night for Gallery Night Providence.

It’s the last chance to say goodbye to our artists-in-residence and see their summer exhibition at MakeDo Studios. While you’re at it, get a drink at ISCOSpirits, explore the cool spots at 50 Sims, and skip up Federal Hill to visit The Clubhouse Gallery & Event Space, home of Providence Drum Troupe.

You might bump into artist and curator Ben Sisto, who is organizing a walking tour for Gallery Night around these parts. Next month, we’ll be on Ben’s route!

Sylvie can vouch: We’re nice down here. And dog friendly.

Workforce Welding is our paid training program that gives Rhode Islanders the skills they need to get living-wage jobs in metalworking. This week, we welcomed back alumni who want to up their welding game.

The five-day program included technical skill building – jig making, cold bending, stick welding, and computer-aided design – as well as covering the soft skills of job quoting and client relations.

This crew is committed to improvement, and so are we.

We're actively reviewing Workforce Welding to ensure it creates a proven path to metal fabrication jobs. We want to ensure everyone in our program gets the skills, certifications, confidence and relationships they need to succeed. We'll keep you posted as we evolve.

Meantime, we raise our oxy-acetylene torches high to all seven Workforce 201 participants! 🔥

Camp Sparklers are in the jewelry studio this week.

The music of metal is in the air. The ping of the hammer on the anvil, the hum of the saw slicing through brass. Campers are learning how to work in small metals by crafting an animal with a moving part - a deer with horns, a mouse with cheese, a beetle with itty bitty wings.

Last summer, Emi Rivera-Colop made a dog with a tail that wagged. At Providence Career and Technical Academy, Emi learned to weld and loved it. So when Emi heard about Camp Sparkle from a mentor at New Urban Arts, they signed up and became a teaching assistant in our welding program. Emi encourages other teens to try a camp at the Yard.

"Camp Sparkle was a great experience. I got to meet students from Moses Brown and other schools, so I not only learned how to work with metal, but how to put myself out there. When you're at camp, everyone is open-minded. Everyone is welcome."

Six welding-curious locals this week turned trash to treasure in a special workforce project at the Yard.🔥

They're turning a rusted steel crane hauled out of the Providence River into a sign for a new public access point on the South Providence waterfront. Recycling at its best. 🌎

Move over, metal.

For Friday's Fab Night, we're bringing out the clay and ink so you've got two other ways to get your hands dirty.

At this special edition of Fab Night, try your hand at ceramics, making a trinket tray or mug or block-printing a tote or bandana. The merch you make will be sold at an Iron Pour event in November!

Can't make it Friday? That's OK.

The clay and ink will be out again at the August 21, September 18, and October 16 Fab Nights. All free, all welcome, all at the Yard @ 27 Sims Avenue.
