For more than 100 years, workers at 27 Sims turned iron into steel and used that metal to create objects of strength and beauty.

On this Labor Day, we salute our industrial past and all the workers of Providence who make a better world with their hearts, minds, and hands.

Heading into the long weekend, we wanted to share our summer highlights! 🌞

We had a juicy season!
Friends, flowers, cute campers, historic welds, and classes with the studio doors open wide. On Fridays, we have pizza and a party atmosphere for Fab Nights. Seasonal bonus: bubbles and hula hoops at the Sims Ave Block Party & Family Fringe.

Enjoy the Labor Day weekend, y'all!

Fab is short for fabrication. It's studio slang for making things with metal.

Fab is also short for fabulous. As in stellar, awesome, prime, fine, fantastic.

Fab Night is tomorrow night, and these evenings are, indeed, fine. Superb. Wonderful. Divine, even.

Come make things with metal, clay, and ink to be set ablaze or sold at the Nov. 14 Iron Pour. Free! Fun! No dang registration!

Just show up and make art with us at @ 27 Sims.

And have a free slice thanks to the good people at Pizza J, who have been giving us deep discounts on their pies for Fab Nights.

See ya! 🔥

Sylvie says come down to Sims Ave. tomorrow night for Gallery Night Providence.

It’s the last chance to say goodbye to our artists-in-residence and see their summer exhibition at MakeDo Studios. While you’re at it, get a drink at ISCOSpirits, explore the cool spots at 50 Sims, and skip up Federal Hill to visit The Clubhouse Gallery & Event Space, home of Providence Drum Troupe.

You might bump into artist and curator Ben Sisto, who is organizing a walking tour for Gallery Night around these parts. Next month, we’ll be on Ben’s route!

Sylvie can vouch: We’re nice down here. And dog friendly.

Workforce Welding is our paid training program that gives Rhode Islanders the skills they need to get living-wage jobs in metalworking. This week, we welcomed back alumni who want to up their welding game.

The five-day program included technical skill building – jig making, cold bending, stick welding, and computer-aided design – as well as covering the soft skills of job quoting and client relations.

This crew is committed to improvement, and so are we.

We're actively reviewing Workforce Welding to ensure it creates a proven path to metal fabrication jobs. We want to ensure everyone in our program gets the skills, certifications, confidence and relationships they need to succeed. We'll keep you posted as we evolve.

Meantime, we raise our oxy-acetylene torches high to all seven Workforce 201 participants! 🔥

Camp Sparklers are in the jewelry studio this week.

The music of metal is in the air. The ping of the hammer on the anvil, the hum of the saw slicing through brass. Campers are learning how to work in small metals by crafting an animal with a moving part - a deer with horns, a mouse with cheese, a beetle with itty bitty wings.

Last summer, Emi Rivera-Colop made a dog with a tail that wagged. At Providence Career and Technical Academy, Emi learned to weld and loved it. So when Emi heard about Camp Sparkle from a mentor at New Urban Arts, they signed up and became a teaching assistant in our welding program. Emi encourages other teens to try a camp at the Yard.

"Camp Sparkle was a great experience. I got to meet students from Moses Brown and other schools, so I not only learned how to work with metal, but how to put myself out there. When you're at camp, everyone is open-minded. Everyone is welcome."

Great story by Michael Rose in New England Art News on the power and purpose of our artist-in-residence program and the new group of makers working in metals and ceramics, who join us next month.

Lots of love in here for the Yard, and the more than 100 artists who've created here since 2002.

Thanks, Michael, for casting your light on a new generation of artists coming to our studios to create, learn, and teach.

Six welding-curious locals this week turned trash to treasure in a special workforce project at the Yard.🔥

They're turning a rusted steel crane hauled out of the Providence River into a sign for a new public access point on the South Providence waterfront. Recycling at its best. 🌎

Check back later this month to see the finished product!

Thanks to NBC 10 WJAR for covering the transformation from public eyesore into public art. 📺

Howdy!

Happy weekend, ya'll.
..And if you're free at 10 a.m. tomorrow, come for an hour or so to help clean the Yard for Volunteer Days. We will have cool sorting tasks. In front of a fan!

Stay cool out there.🥵
