Share My Meals Inc. Fighting food insecurity and the environmental impact of food surplus

Share My Meals collects balanced meals made from surplus prepared foods from food service providers and distributes them directly to the homes of local families in need. Since 2020, we have delivered more than 120,000 healthy meals directly to the home of the 180 families enrolled in our program.

Hunger is not inevitable. It is created by systems we have the power to change.

This World Hunger Day, Share My Meals is asking everyone to take one visible action. Right now in New Jersey, 1.4 million tons of surplus food are generated annually, yet 1 million of our neighbors (including 263,000 children) face food insecurity.
Every meal we recover is delivered directly to somewhere it is needed most: a working caregiver, a local shelter, an after school program, or an elderly neighbor. Every meal counts. Every hand matters.

Help us extend our reach to thousands more neighbors today. Choose your role:

When individuals show up, communities are changed for the better.

Meet Leighann from Novo Nordisk, one of the incredible corporate volunteers who has joined us through our Corporate Volunteer Program. Her words say it best:

"This volunteer work is meaningful to me because it not only supports those facing food insecurity but also honors the hard work of farmers and food service partners by ensuring their efforts support those in need."

Through our Corporate Volunteer Program, teams like Novo Nordisk come together to rescue food from onsite kitchens and deliver it directly to nearby nonprofits serving our neighbors.

We're proud to partner with companies making a real difference, and grateful for volunteers like Leighann who bring heart to the work.

Last Saturday, Lucy DiSanto, Partnership & Development Associate at Share My Meals, had the opportunity to join the Careers in Food Systems Panel hosted by and Mercer County, Rutgers Cooperative Extension

The panel brought together high school students from New Jersey and Maine to explore the many pathways into food systems work — from farming and public health to food recovery, research, and community advocacy.

Lucy joined an inspiring group of panelists, including Dr Kevin Lyons ( University), Natasha Luccia (La Finquita Speciality Crop Farm), Dr Veronica Jones (Rutgers University), Denyelle Burgess (), and Dr Emily Merchant (), to discuss their career journeys, what motivates their work, and how young people can get involved in building stronger local food systems.

Thank you to Gabrille Bromfield (Rutgers Cooperative Extension, Dept. of 4-H Youth Development) and the entire team at Essex County 4-H for organizing a wonderful event.

It was energizing to spend time with such thoughtful and engaged young people who are thinking critically about the issues that matter most to their communities.

The future of food systems is collaborative, community-driven, and already being shaped by the next generation.

Last Friday, our team attended the annual Sustainable Jersey Summit in Holmdel, NJ, where we connected with leaders from schools, local public institutions, companies, and foundations across , all dedicated to building a more sustainable, environmentally conscious world.

Our incredible partner, Kate Lemerich from Metuchen Public School District, spoke about the impact of the Meal Recovery Program during the Food Waste in Schools session. We discussed exciting new opportunities for collaboration with partners like Maschio's Food Services, Inc.’s and dozens of school districts across the state. And we even had a surprise visit with one of our fabulous volunteers!

Equally exciting was that the Meal Recovery Coalition’s statewide Food Donation Guidelines were highlighted by Alessia Eramo (Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority) at the Summit as a key tool for enabling more surplus meals donations statewide!

We’re proud to work in New Jersey, where sustainability is prioritized and valued!

Every year, Kellman Brown Academy (KBA) hosts a Hackathon, as part of their commitment to JSTEM (Jewish Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). The Hackathon invites middle school students to participate in the “Design Thinking Process”, addressing real world problems. This year, the students were tasked with designing a sustainable city with no food waste from farm to table, while maintaining a healthy and safe environment for their citizens.

Students were divided into five teams with people they didn't know and given one day and half to complete the project. Each team came up with innovative ideas like a 2-layered city where composting takes place underground and farming takes place above ground; a town focused on vertical farming and green buildings, a community where every home grows a garden, a zipline that delivers fresh food from farms to homes, and a town surrounded by a river that gives access to all their needs.

Share My Meals Inc. was honored to participate as a judge and to witness the confidence, collaboration, and original thinking these students portrayed to design their sustainable cities. A well deserved recognition is given to the KBA teacher staff for organizing this project and sharing the important knowledge of sustainability with their students.

Today we celebrate and bid a bittersweet farewell to one of Share My Meals' most treasured champions, Chef Anthony, SodexoMagic Executive Chef at Bristol Myers Squibb Lawrenceville.

From day one, Chef Anthony was there. As one of our very first food donors, he didn't just donate meals - he showed up in every way imaginable: mentoring volunteers, supporting our operations, and using his voice to advocate for our mission far and wide. We're also deeply grateful to SodexoMagic for fostering a culture that makes partnerships like this one possible.

🧡 Chef Anthony, the care you poured into every meal and every interaction fed more than just bodies - it nourished our entire community. You will be very, very missed.

Wishing you a retirement as warm and generous as you are. Thank you for everything.

We are honored to have Caitlin, a former journalist and content strategist (for The Wall Street Journal, CNBC, the Financial Times, and MJH Life Sciences), contributing her communications expertise to Share My Meals.

Since August 2025, Caitlin has been doing double duty. Behind the scenes, she’s crafting press releases, newsletters, and our Annual Report. On the ground, she picks up food on Thursdays from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway and delivers it to First Presbyterian Church of Metuchen’s food pantry, ensuring families in Metuchen and Edison stay nourished.

“It is astounding that in New Jersey, a relatively affluent state, 11% of residents are food insecure,” she explains. “Share My Meals’ mission of recovering nutritious prepared food, getting it to those who need it, and saving it from landfills, is deeply meaningful to me.”

Thank you for your dedication and contribution, Caitlin! You help us grow, improve, and reach more neighbors every day!

Last month, nine incredible volunteers from Natixis joined forces with Share My Meals for a very special mission in the heart of New York City.

Together, they picked up surplus food from Paul Weiss and walked it all the way to the Coalition for the Homeless, Inc. Just heart, hustle, and strong arms.

Beyond the delivery, our volunteers took the time to learn about the realities of food waste and food insecurity right here in New York, a city where so much food goes to waste while so many go without.

A huge thank you to every single one of the Natixis volunteers for showing up, showing out, and making a real difference. This is what community looks like. ❤️

We had a blast visiting the Accenture NYC team last Wednesday during their Week of Service, to dive into our partnership and its impact on environmental goals.Accenture has been a rockstar supporter for years, helping us build our Salesforce-powered STAN technology. This platform is the "brain" behind our operations, helping us track thousands of meals with 100% safety and transparency.

Beyond the presentation, fifteen team members jumped into action for a "tray labeling" activity! These reusable trays are the physical link between surplus prepared meals from corporate cafeterias and the families we serve, helping us reduce waste at every step.

From technology development to on-site action, Accenture is a rockstar member of our Meal Recovery Coalition. We are so grateful for years of support and can’t wait to keep this momentum going as the program will officially launch on-site soon.

A huge thank you to the entire team of Accenture for your unwavering commitment.
