This holiday season, NJSHA's Student Involvement Committee is once again working in collaboration with the Ryan Patrick Faella Foundation, a charitable non-profit organization, to hold a toy collection drive: Ryan’s Toy Roundup!

The drive will collect and distribute toys to less fortunate children throughout New Jersey. Collection boxes will be set up at participating schools, with donations accepted from October 28 through December 2. Every contribution makes a meaningful difference in the life of a child.

As SLPs and Audiologists, we can make the season meaningful by honoring each family’s cultural traditions, respecting different ways of celebrating (or not celebrating), and incorporating culturally relevant books, activities, and language experiences.

💬 AAC Is for More Than Speech Therapy!

One important reminder for school teams:
📢 AAC is a student’s communication system, not an SLP-only tool.

If a student uses AAC, consider whether their system is available and supported:
🏫 In the classroom
🍎 At lunch
🛝 On the playground
🚌 During transportation
🎨 During specials
🏠 At home
👥 With peers
📚 During academic activities

Communication happens everywhere.

A great AAC goal for this month?
👉 Teach more communication partners to communicate with the student, not just teach the student to communicate with adults.

Advancing patient-centered care through interprofessional collaboration!

NJSHA members Diane Callari, MA, CCC-SLP, ATP and Barbra Seltzer, MS, CCC-SLP, ATP recently spoke with 4th-year dental students at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine about strategies for supporting patients with complex communication needs.

Equipping future dentists with the knowledge and tools (like AAC) to ensure every patient feels heard and supported in the dental chair makes all the difference. Special thanks to Dr. Evan Spivak for welcoming them to campus!

NJSHA Member Catherine Fredericks receives the Spirit Award at the 2026 Assistive Technology Summit!

Mike Marotta, Director of the Richard West Assistive Technology Advocacy Center (ATAC) of Disability Rights NJ, presented Catherine Fredericks with the 2026 Naomi Leibowitz Spirit Award. This award honors an individual who embodies the very best of the assistive technology community: passionate about people, committed to inclusion, and driven to make a difference. Catherine, throughout her 45-year career as an SLP and still now during her “retirement,” continues to make an impact here in NJ and beyond! She has created several AAC Playground boards and empowered professionals and community leaders to develop these powerful communication aids within their own states and communities.

Catherine serves on the Board of Directors for the NJ Coalition for the Advancement of Assistive and Rehabilitation Technology (NJCART) and is a dedicated NJSHA AAC Committee member whose passion, vision, and commitment to providing communication access to those with complex needs are all inspiring. Catherine was a guiding force in developing Learning Modules for Paraprofessionals and actively coordinated NJSHA, NJCART, and ATAC to make access to these resources a reality on NJSHA and NJCART websites.

Catherine’s professional commitment to those with disabilities challenges us to acknowledge the barriers yet move beyond them to envision what is possible. Congratulations, Catherine, on receiving the Naomi Liebowitz Spirit Award!
