Optimist Club of Calvert The Optimist Club of Calvert is a non-profit organization working for the benefit of the community's children.

The Optimist Club of Calvert is a non-profit organization run by adult volunteers. Our mission is to help kids in the local community with service projects, scholarships, and support for other youth organizations. The Optimist Club of Calvert holds dinner meeting the 4th Monday of every month at O'Gannigans in Prince Frederick at 7:00pm. Anyone interested in joining or seeing what we're about is welcome to attend.

The Optimist Club of Calvert is proud to announce our 2026 Scholarship Winners!

My Nguyen, a recent graduate of Calvert High School, was awarded the Les Knapp Scholarship, valued at $8,000. My plans to study pre-med and eventually become a doctor.

Lucas Grover, a recent graduate of Northern High School, was awarded the Jim King Scholarship, valued at $6,000. Lucas wants to work in politics and law, and he plans to study Political Science and/or Economics.

Madilyn Espenschade, who recently graduated from Calvert High School, was awarded the Robert L. Chaney Career/Vocational/Technical Scholarship, valued at $3,000. Madilyn wants to work in early childhood education.

Danielle Sypolt, who recently graduated from Northern High School, was awarded the inaugural Andrew Jackson “Jack” Brown Scholarship, valued at $3,000. Danielle, who wants to pursue a career in criminal justice and law enforcement, has committed to playing softball for Newberry College.

During our May 27 dinner meeting, past Club President Krista Brezina recognized and thanked our members and friends for all they do in support of the Optimist Club.

"For nearly six decades, our Club has been dedicated to bringing out the best in the youth of Calvert County. We offer scholarships, youth recognition programs, contests, service projects, community events, and support for other youth organizations to encourage, provide opportunities, and create positive experiences for young people in our community. None of that happens on its own.

It happens because of the dedication of our members and volunteers who willingly give their time, energy, talents, and hearts to support our mission. What especially stands out to me is the incredible commitment shown by so many of our members. We have members who have dedicated not just years, but decades of service to this Club and to the youth of Calvert County. Their continued involvement, institutional knowledge, and willingness to keep showing up year after year is truly inspiring.

To all of you — whether you have been involved for forty years or joined more recently — thank you. Thank you for your service, your generosity, and your belief that investing in youth matters."
