The COVID-19 pandemic presented our camp with quite the challenge, but we rose to the challenge and made adjustments for camp in 2020 and 2021. Reading Camp during the pandemic was carried out via Zoom and stretched to a two-week window. Our campers participated in an opening and a closing meeting; and we opened our virtual camp to children from across the County entering grades 2-5 in the fall a
nd provided backpacks of books, snacks and materials to complete activities at home - with or without internet access. We changed our mission to include children who most likely did not have a home library, regardless of their reading levels. We foresee returning to our live camp activities in 2022. Reading Camp Calvert is a week-long summer camp in Calvert County. The mission of Reading Camp Calvert is to promote personal and academic growth and success for struggling, at-risk students and to encourage them to become strong readers, engaged students, and responsible members of their communities. Reading Camp works with children entering grades 3-5 to review and improve reading skills, build self-confidence, grow a love of reading and learning, and stem the effects of βsummer reading loss.β
During their week at camp, campers receive tutoring each morning focusing on phonics, sight words, decoding/encoding, strategies, comprehension, writing, and pleasure reading using games and other non-traditional activities. In the afternoon, campers enjoy traditional camp activities, such as swimming, crafts, and field trips. They also enjoy breakfast, lunch, and two snacks daily. All fees are paid through donations and grants. There is no fee to attend Reading Camp, as we are sponsored by a coalition of churches in Calvert County and civic and community partners. All Saints Episcopal Church began the first first reading camp in 2013. Currently Reading Camp Calvert hosts two camps each summer. Reading Camp Calvert North is held at St. Paulβs Episcopal church in Prince Frederick and Reading Camp Calvert South is held at Middleham and St. Peterβs Episcopal Church in Lusby.
