Eliminating Unpermitted Signs Within Public Rights-of-Way

The Calvert County Board of Commissioners (BOCC) recently approved a proactive initiative aimed at enhancing the safety and aesthetics of our community by eliminating unpermitted signage that does not conform to the signage regulations. These unpermitted signs pose a hinderance to motorists by obstructing views at intersections and they contribute to excessive clutter along our roadways.

Beginning April 1, 2024, unpermitted signs will be removed by the Department of Public Works staff. The signs will be stored for two weeks at the Appeal Landfill located at 401 Sweetwater Road in Lusby, and may be retrieved by the owner for a fee of $6 per sign. Any signs remaining after two weeks will be discarded.

The BOCC encourages all residents and businesses to support this initiative by adhering to the sign regulations listed in the Calvert County Zoning Ordinance. If you require permitted signage, the process is designed to accommodate legal and safe placement. View the sign ordinance at https://ecode360.com/29293346Z. By working together, we can ensure pleasing aesthetics, safer roadways and intersections free of obstructions.

πŸ“’ Attention, SoMD Young Professionals Network Community

In light of recent events at our SoMD Small Business Roundtable, it's with a heavy heart that we address an unexpected turn of events. We believe in fostering an environment where respect flourishes and where every voice can contribute to our vibrant discussions. However, the behavior displayed by Delegate Mark Fisher was not in alignment with the values we hold dear.

It's said that actions speak louder than words, but words can indeed leave a lasting impact. While we treasure lively debates and the exchange of ideas, resorting to name-calling and demeaning remarks is a chapter we'd rather skip. Our playground days are behind us, and we look forward to engaging in mature, constructive conversations that light the path forward for our community and small businesses.

In moments like these, we're reminded of the power of our voices, not just in conversation but also at the ballot box. Every vote is a seed planted for the future we wish to cultivate together. As we navigate these waters, let's stay anchored in the values that unite us: respect, integrity, and the relentless pursuit of growth.

For those seeking clarity or wishing to express concerns about the recent roundtable events, we encourage you to reach out directly to Delegate Mark Fisher at 410-841-3231 or [email protected]
It's through open dialogue that we can aspire to better understandings and stronger bridges.

Let's continue to stand together, advocating for the respect and constructive engagement we all deserve. After all, we're not just professionals; we're pioneers of change in the beautiful tapestry that is Southern Maryland.

With respect and solidarity,
SoMD Young Professionals Network
