Today, the YWCA USA Board of Directors announces an important leadership transition.

We thank Margaret Mitchell for five years of leadership as CEO and 15 years of service to the YWCA sisterhood.

We are pleased to announce Ruth T. Jones Nichols, Ph.D., as Interim CEO, effective October 26, 2026. A nationally recognized nonprofit executive and social impact leader, her connection to YWCA's mission is both personal and professional, shaped by her family's experience finding refuge in a YWCA shelter and her service as Executive Director of YWCA South Hampton Roads. Throughout her career, Dr. Jones Nichols has led complex nonprofit and public-sector organizations, including senior leadership roles at Local Initiatives and Support Corporation (LISC), the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Feeding America, and the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore.

We remain focused on serving communities and advancing our mission nationwide.

Sometimes changing a young person’s life starts with showing them something they have never seen before!

Ms. Tina Knowles has reflected on the impact of being exposed as a young person to art, culture, fashion, restaurants, and experiences beyond the world she already knew. Looking back on the influence those experiences had on her life, she said, “I know what mentoring can do.”

Ms. Tina Knowles holds a special place in the National CARES community. In 2025, we had the privilege of honoring her at our National CARES Mentoring Movement “For the Love of Children” Gala, recognizing her commitment to young people, community, and using her influence to create opportunities for others.

For many of us, one of our earliest introductions to Keke Palmer came through Akeelah and the Bee. That film was about much more than a spelling competition.
