A more walkable downtown is a stronger downtown.

As Portsmouth advances its Main Street initiative, creating a vibrant, connected High Street corridor is central to our vision for a downtown where people want to gather, explore, shop, dine and invest.

Join nationally recognized city planner and Walkable City author Jeff Speck for Building a Walkable Coastal Virginia—a conversation about how thoughtful urban design can bring more people to our streets, strengthen local businesses, encourage private investment and create a more welcoming downtown for residents and visitors alike.

We’re excited to see this conversation happening right here in downtown Portsmouth and look forward to exploring how walkability can help shape the future of our historic commercial district.

Big things are cooking on High Street! The Portsmouth Partnership is excited to put a $15,000 Community Vitality Grant from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development to work creating a semi-permanent food truck destination in Olde Towne.

This initiative is about more than food trucks. It’s about creating opportunities for entrepreneurs, bringing new energy to High Street, and building a stronger small business ecosystem.

With research pointing to demand for approximately 14 additional restaurants in Olde Towne, we see tremendous potential to support the next generation of Portsmouth's food entrepreneurs.

This is what Main Street revitalization looks like: reimagining vacant spaces, investing in small businesses, and creating new reasons for people to visit, gather, and stay awhile.

Check out the story from 13News Now - WVEC to learn more! 👇

In Portsmouth, the Port of Virginia is more than a global gateway—it’s woven into our local economy. From maritime and logistics businesses to the small businesses, restaurants, and shops along Main Street, our port helps move Portsmouth forward.

Happy World Maritime Day. This year's theme, "Powering Maritime Excellence," is one Portsmouth lives out every day.
