We get a higher turnout each year for Wreaths Across America at Cedar Grove Cemetery. It’s encouraging because it shows how valued our veterans are to the Tidewater/Hampton Roads community.

Veterans and active duty spanning the spectrum of services were on hand today, to place wreaths on the graves of veterans from wars from the beginning of this country including the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Spanish American War, Civil War, World War 1, World War 2, Korea, and Vietnam. We have over 550 veterans buried at Cedar Grove and had a wreath for each and every one of them made possible by sponsors just like you!

Joining us was Portsmouth Mayor Shannon Glover, Councilman Bill Moody and Councilman-elect, Vernon Tillage. We appreciate them and our City support.

We could not have accomplished this event without Boy Scouts of America Troop 16, Driver, Virginia. They brought the event to Cedar Grove Cemetery 5 years ago and hope to host it for many years to come.

If you joined us today, you were part of the millions of people placing wreaths on graves at thousands of cemeteries across this nation during Wreaths Across America.

If the names Capt. Arthur Emmerson, Tapley Webb, George Smith, Antonio Bilosoly, or any of the 550 veterans buried at Cedar Grove mean nothing to you today, hopefully they’ll mean something tomorrow after placing a wreath on the grave of one of these brave veterans buried at Cedar Grove during the Wreaths Across America event.

This is our fifth year of participating at this historic cemetery; the first secular cemetery in the City of Portsmouth, established in 1832. At Cedar Grove we have veterans from every war starting from the American Revolution through Vietnam.

Wreaths Across America teaches younger generations to honor, remember, and teach about the sacrifices made by veterans and takes place at cemeteries across the nation on the same day at about the same time.

Please join us to place a wreath even if you’ve not sponsored one. We have enough wreaths for all of our veterans with each participant guaranteed to get at least one. It starts at noon at Cedar Grove Cemetery, 301 Fort Ln., Portsmouth.

It's that time of year to sponsor wreaths to Remember, Honor, and Teach about the sacrifices veterans have made for this country. To that, we so appreciate the nationwide not-for-profit Wreaths Across America event that will take place at 3500 cemeteries across this country including Cedar Grove, most on same day at the same hour; noon, Saturday, December 17th at 301 Fort Lane., Portsmouth, Virginia.

This is the fifth year Cedar Grove will be participating in the placing of wreaths on graves of veterans from all wars interred at Portsmouth's historic Cedar Grove Cemetery. Founded in 1832, Cedar Grove has about 550 veterans from beginning of the Revolutionary War through Vietnam. Our goal is to have a wreath to lay on every veteran grave to say "thank you for your sacrifices in keeping our country free."

To sponsor a wreath log on to www.wreathsacrossamerica.org. As you search cemeteries, you will find Portsmouth's Cedar Grove Cemetery pops to the top of the list. You can even designate a wreath in the name of a veteran not located at Cedar Grove. We will be updating this event until December 17th so please check back. And on behalf of the 550 veterans buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery, we thank you! CGCF

Portsmouth Cedar Grove Cemetery Foundation members, Barbara Early & Dottie Lindley were invited to our sister cemetery, Cedar Grove Cemetery in Norfolk, today to a Plaque Dedication Ceremony honoring 6 Revolutionary War Patriots and 20 War of 1812 soldiers. The ceremony was organized by the Norfolk Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and the War of 1812 Society. Both groups work tirelessly to research, recognize, and honor our first warriors and those who followed in their footsteps.

It was good hearing highlights of each soldier honored; where & when they were born, where they lived, what they did after the war, where they died, and where they are buried. These stories were a good reminder that many of these soldiers had skills that didn’t stop with courage and bravery on the battlefield. There is no better place to learn more about them than Cedar Grove Cemetery in Norfolk and our own Cedar Grove Cemetery here in Portsmouth where we have at least 13 Revolutionary War Patriots and close to fifty War of 1812 soldiers.

Our Portsmouth Cedar Grove Cemetery Foundation president, Barbara Early, was also awarded a Patriots Graves Preservation Medal by the SAR for research and maintenance of Revolutionary War graves at Portsmouth’s Cedar Grove Cemetery. During her comments she stated that "without the help of our dedicated volunteers our mission at Cedar Grove Cemetery (Portsmouth) would not have come to fruition. CGCF
