With temperatures rising, several cooling centers are available throughout Portsmouth to provide a safe, air-conditioned place to cool off during operating hours.

Cooling centers are located at Portsmouth libraries, City Hall, the Welcome Center, Behavioral Healthcare Services, Social Services, the Senior Station, and the Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center.

💧 Water will be provided.
🐾 Pets are not permitted inside buildings, except for service animals.

Looking for a great summer job? Oasis Social Ministry is seeking a motivated, dependable, and energetic Warehouse Assistant to join our team!

📍 Location: Oasis Social Ministry, Portsmouth
🕗 Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM

This is an excellent opportunity for a college student looking to gain hands-on experience while making a meaningful impact in the community.

Responsibilities include:
✅ Assisting with food warehouse operations
✅ Organizing and stocking inventory
✅ Helping prepare for food distributions
✅ Loading and unloading donations
✅ Working as part of a fast-paced, mission-driven team

Ideal candidates are:
✔ Team players
✔ Self-motivated and dependable
✔ Able to lift up to 50 pounds
✔ Organized and willing to learn
✔ Passionate about serving others

A huge thank you to Morganne and everyone at Elizabeth River Crossings for their incredible generosity and continued support of Oasis Social Ministry!

Today, ERC donated more than 200 pounds of gently used clothing to help stock our free Thrifty Boutique. These donations will provide dignity, comfort, and practical support to individuals and families facing difficult circumstances throughout our community.

Partnerships like this remind us that when organizations come together with a shared commitment to helping others, lives are changed. Thank you, Morganne and the entire ERC team, for making a difference and helping us extend hope to those who need it most. ❤️

Congratulations to Lorna Slaughter and the team at Suffolk Christian Fellowship Center on the launch of their new Food Locker!

At Oasis, we believe in celebrating fellow organizations that are doing the important, boots-on-the-ground work of serving our communities. This partnership with Sentara Obici Hospital is a wonderful example of what can happen when organizations come together to expand access to food, dignity, and hope.

We were honored to welcome Congressman Bobby Scott to Oasis Social Ministry .

During his visit, Congressman Scott took time to tour our facility, meet with our dedicated team, and learn firsthand about the growing challenges facing the individuals and families we serve every day. We had meaningful conversations about the impact of rising food costs, increased demand for assistance, and the very real concerns surrounding reductions in SNAP benefits and other critical support programs.

What stood out most was his genuine interest in understanding the realities facing our community and the people we serve. It means a great deal when our elected leaders take the time to listen, ask questions, and engage directly with the work happening on the ground.

We are grateful for Congressman Scott’s visit, his continued commitment to our region, and his willingness to stay connected to the needs of our neighbors. Together, through awareness, compassion, and collaboration, we can continue working toward solutions that ensure no one is left behind.

When our washing machine unexpectedly gave up, it left a critical gap in our daily operations. From kitchen linens and towels to helping maintain a clean and welcoming environment, this equipment plays an important role in serving our community each day.

A heartfelt thank you to Mike, Paul, and the wonderful congregation of St. Therese for stepping in so quickly to make sure we didn't miss a beat. Your generosity and swift response are a beautiful reminder of what community looks like in action.
