The 25th Anniversary edition of Be the Gift, Be the Light is now available for order!

We are excited to announce the release of Grace’s 25th Anniversary edition of her book Be the Gift, Be the Light - Stories of My Mother’s Legacy. The new edition features the highly requested and authentically written stories by students and leaders from Kenya, Uganda, and USA. Some of Grace’s frequently requested and favorite recipes from her previous writings are also shared, including samosas!

25 years ago, three women started Harambee: Grace Kuto, the late Jackie Goldrick and the late Wangari Maathai, Ph.D., Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Dr. Maathai won the Nobel for a movement built on rural women doing ordinary work together.

That conviction took us to Arusha, Tanzania. We put 100 sewing machines into the hands of more than 200 women, along with the business training to use them. One graduate had left secondary school early when her family couldn't afford the fees. She began sewing for a few neighbours and taught her husband the trade!

That's her daughter on her lap. And yes, she's in school. Everyone assumed school was over for her when she got pregnant. Happily, they were wrong.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, girls in western Kenya were three times more likely to drop out. Pregnancy usually made it permanent. That's when Harambee Centre stepped in.

We call the work Najijali. It means "I care for myself." There's a daycare for their children while they're in class, counsellors they can talk to, health classes, and two years of training that end with a skill they can earn from.

25 years of Harambee, and second chances like this one are what we're proudest of. Every girl deserves a future. Join us in Portland on Oct 18, or fund a girl's training year today.
