Over the past 25 years, Harambee Centre has supported projects that build stronger, healthier, and more sustainable communities. In Kenya, we have stood with the student-led Peace Ambassadors Club at Chwele Girls High School as they planted 300 fruit trees for shade, food, and environmental sustainability.

The St. Andrew’s Matale Secondary School Water Harvesting Project began in 2020 and was dedicated in 2023. Through this project, rainwater is collected off of the roofs of four campus building and deposited into a central underground catchment tank. This project provides students and staff with safe, filtered water. Prior to the project, students (primarily girls) missed classes and were exposed to unsafe conditions while collecting water from a stream roughly 2.5 miles from the school to supplement the school’s main water supply. Through this project, Harambee Centre has helped promote safety, good hygiene, and academic equality for students at St. Andrew’s.

This water project enhances the WASH program that was already in place at the school to teach students and the community about the importance of washing hands and promoting good sanitation. A handful of students receive training on the new water system, setting them up for careers in engineering or water maintenance.

With Harambee’s 25th Anniversary just around the corner, we celebrate the progress towards equitable education, equal access to clean water, and improved sanitation over the last 25 years.

Construction of the girls’ dormitory at St. Andrew’s Secondary School in Matale, Uganda began in 2015 and was completed in 2024. Before the dormitory was built, many girls walked 3-7 miles each way to attend the school, often being exposed to unsafe conditions. The dormitory provides a safe place for 400 girls to stay and allows them to focus on their studies. As we celebrate 25 years of the Harambee Centre, we celebrate the progress towards a safe and equitable environment for girls to receive education.

Over the last 25 years, Harambee Centre has helped increase access to healthcare and supported public health initiatives in Chwele, Kenya through the Chwele Health Clinic. The clinic was build in 1998 and provides emergency, preventative, and primary care for a variety of conditions including malaria, HIV/AIDS, and respiratory diseases. Harambee helped purchase an ambulance (as depicted above), supported medical supplies and equipment, and partnered with Oregon Health & Science University to improve health services.

For 25 years, Harambee Centre has connected the Pacific Northwest and East Africa through cultural exchange trips that bring students, teachers, and volunteers together across borders. Through these journeys, people from the United States, Uganda, and Kenya have gained knowledge, leadership, and a lasting spirit of service.

Through Harambee’s Africa Is Not a Country curriculum, students learn to see Africa with truth, curiosity, and respect. For 25 years, Harambee has been building understanding through education and connection.

Congratulations to our board member, Dr. Jennifer Nattabi, who recently earned her PhD in Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis. We are grateful to Jennifer for her service to Harambee.
