Meet our member: Wild Rivers Land Trust

Community is at the heart of protecting the natural places we love.

Back in 2000, a small group of residents on Oregon’s South Coast came together with a shared vision: to conserve land along the Elk River. More than two decades later, Wild Rivers Land Trust’s service area has grown to 2.2 million acres across Coos, Curry, and southwestern Douglas counties.

From Reedsport to the California border, Wild Rivers Land Trust safeguards clean watersheds and vital fish habitats, prevents overdevelopment, and works side by side with private landowners, public agencies, and local tribes. Their strategy is to protect critical habitat by working with landowners with lands of high conservation value. Wild Rivers Land Trust's purpose is clear: promote responsible land stewardship so Oregon’s South Coast remains healthy, vibrant, and wild for generations to come.

On Monday, August 3, KAS President Ann Vileisis will give a slide presentation at the Curry Public Library highlighting the remarkable serpentine landscapes and wild rivers in our public lands backyard that now face renewed nickel strip mining threats. As KAS members know, the threat of nickel strip mining in Southwest Oregon’s Kalmiopsis-Wild Rivers Coast area has been growing. Over the past year, foreign-owned mining companies have staked more than 17,000 acres of mining claims in the headwaters and watersheds of our region's outstanding wild rivers—including the Elk, Rogue, Illinois, Hunter Creek, Pistol River and the Smith. Meanwhile, recent federal policy changes aimed at expediting domestic mineral production have increased the risks of large-scale mining on local National Forest lands. Come learn what's at stake, why these places matter to our communities, and what you can do to help protect them. Curry Public Library is located at 94341 3rd St in Gold Beach. Light refreshments.
