Yesterday we had 17 intrepid, intergenerational hikers and lovers of the wilderness join us on Kalmiopsis Audubon Society’s annual wildflower hike to Signal Butte. It was a glorious day to be with others who love and care for our public lands and wild areas.

Collectively we shared so much knowledge, great stories and history, encouragement and kindness.

Special thanks to the family members of botanist Veva Stansell for sharing your stories of your mother/grandmother who did so much to protect these beautiful lands.

You can learn more about the work the Kalmiopsis Audubon Society does at kalmiopsisaudubon.org.

Thank you all!

We had a GREAT day removing scotch broom from Tseriadun SP yesterday. Thanks so much to our volunteer work crew (not everyone pictured) and to the wonderful Pete and Pete from State Parks. Everyone worked so hard we were done three hours early! There will be another one of these in the fall if anyone is interested. [email protected].

Join us next month on Sunday, May 24 for a wonderful KAS tradition—our spring wildflower hike to the Signal Buttes Area in the hills behind Gold Beach, proposed as the Veva Stansell Botanical Area.

This hike is moderate to difficult and will include a trip to the Signal Buttes summit, with fabulous 360-degree views. Along the way, you’ll learn about the unique serpentine botany of our region and, of course, enjoy spring wild flowers! Total length of hike is 4.25 miles with 840 feet elevation gain. Wear sturdy hiking shoes, sun protection, and bring lunch, snacks, and plenty of water. Be prepared for the weather.

It takes about 45 minutes to get to the trailhead from Gold Beach. Meet up at the Gold Beach Visitor Center (south end of town) at 9 am sharp to caravan and carpool. An RSVP is needed by the Wednesday preceding this trip for any additional pre-trip information and in case weather causes us to shift the date.

Please RSVP to Charlie at [email protected]. In your RSVP, please let us know if you can help by driving with a 4WD or high clearance vehicle and how many passengers you can take. Sponsored by Kalmiopsis Audubon.

"Take a look at the nostrils of this Turkey Vulture. Most birds don’t have remarkable senses of smell, but vultures, with their large and unusual nostrils, are the exception. Turkey Vultures especially, which can use odors while soaring high up in the sky to detect yummy carrion on the ground hundreds of feet below."
