This week’s Breakfast of Champions brought together leaders from across Oakland County to explore a timely topic: The Future of Leadership in a Changing Workforce.

Attendees enjoyed a morning of networking, insight, and meaningful conversation led by a distinguished panel moderated by Sue Justice (Emery HR), featuring Sunil Asija (Oakland County), Amy Bouque (Kelly), Sandy Harvey (Exodus Consulting Group), and Dre Thompson (Talent Solutions Now). Together, they explored evolving workforce trends, leadership challenges, and opportunities shaping the future of work.

Economy & Workforce Development in Action!

Leadership Oakland's LO###VII Cornerstone class recently gathered at Oakland Community College's Auburn Hills Campus for an engaging day focused on the economic forces, workforce trends, and community partnerships shaping Oakland County's future.

From an economic overview of Oakland County and the revitalization efforts underway in Pontiac presented by Mayor Mike McGuiness, to insightful discussions on talent development, apprenticeships, entrepreneurship, healthcare workforce strategies, and small business support, class members gained valuable perspectives from leaders across multiple sectors. Highlights included a dynamic leadership panel featuring experts from Stitchi, OCC, and Little Caesars, as well as presentations from Oakland Thrive, Michigan Works!, and Henry Ford Health.

Leadership Oakland Cornerstone Class LO###VII is ready to make a lasting impact!

Do you know a nonprofit organization in Oakland County with a project that could benefit from the power of community volunteers, leadership, and support? Leadership Oakland's Cornerstone Class LO###VII is now accepting applications for its 2027 Day of Service Project Partner.

One nonprofit will be selected to collaborate with LO37 on a high-impact project supported by up to 50 volunteers and anticipated funding of $15,000-$25,000 (subject to fundraising results). We're looking for projects that create meaningful, hands-on volunteer opportunities and leave a sustainable impact for Oakland County residents.

A Night of Learning in Local Government

This week, Leadership Oakland Cornerstone Class LO###VII had the unique opportunity to experience county government in action during an evening at the Oakland County Board of Commissioners meeting.

Before the meeting began, class members met with both the Democratic and Republican caucuses for insightful conversations about public service, leadership, and the important work of representing Oakland County residents. Participants learned how commissioner districts are redrawn every 10 years following the U.S. Census, with the next redistricting process scheduled after the 2030 Census. They also gained a better understanding of the election cycle for commissioners, who serve four-year terms and will next appear on the ballot in 2028.

The evening continued with the opportunity to hear public comments, witness proclamations, and observe the democratic process in action. Seeing how local government functions firsthand provided a deeper understanding of civic leadership, community engagement, and the decisions that shape our county every day.

Thank you to the Oakland County Commissioners and staff for providing such a meaningful and educational experience for our class. Experiences like these help develop informed, engaged leaders who are committed to making a difference in our communities.

Honoring Indigenous Peoples in Oakland County and Southeast Michigan

Today, Leadership Oakland recognizes Indigenous Peoples’ Day and honors the Native peoples whose histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions are an enduring part of our region.

As leaders and community members, it is important that we understand the history of the places we call home—including the Indigenous communities who have cared for and been connected to this land for generations.

We encourage our Leadership Oakland community to take time to learn more about the Indigenous peoples of Michigan, their rich cultures and traditions, and the many ways Native communities continue to contribute to our state and region today.

We honor the past, recognize the present, and commit to learning for a more informed and inclusive future.
