Founded in 1993, Green Building Alliance (GBA)is an independent nonprofit & one of the oldest regional green building organizations in the U.S.

GBA proudly serves Pittsburgh & Western Pennsylvania, with stakeholders across the Mid-Atlantic, U.S., & globe. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, GBA was founded in 1993 and was one of the first U.S. Green Building Council affiliate organizations. GBA continues to be a catalyst in our region and strives to meet the ever-growing and ever-changing demands of the green building marketplace through multiple programs and initiatives.

We're halfway through Resilient & Healthy Spaces Week!

Over the last two days, attendees have explored green building fundamentals, learned from community resilience leaders across Pennsylvania, and toured innovative stormwater infrastructure projects that are helping build a more sustainable future.

Join GBA and Pittsburgh Water for a look at new solutions being implemented across Pittsburgh to reduce flooding, decrease pollution, and modernize local stormwater infrastructure.

The two-phased Wightman Park Improvement Project in Squirrel Hill was more than just a facelift – it provided a much-needed answer to the stormwater problems that the park and surrounding neighborhood routinely experienced. To achieve its goals, the project focused on more than just the park, instead deploying a comprehensive neighborhood-wide approach and adding a network of green stormwater solutions that captures and conveys stormwater directly to the park.

As a result, stormwater in this part of Squirrel Hill is now effectively directed and managed. A rain garden and underground storage enable the park to capture over 350,000 gallons of stormwater runoff. Green stormwater infrastructure promotes natural infiltration, preventing flooding, sewer overflows into the Monongahela River, and basement sewage backups in the surrounding area.

Yesterday’s sunny cool morning was the perfect setting for GBA’s tour of First Tee - Pittsburgh Arnold Palmer Learning Center. First Tee-Pittsburgh and R3A Architecture led the tour, showcasing the project’s sustainable design features, which include:

☀️ Learning Center roof positioned and calibrated according to a year-round sun angle study, ensuring that the sun’s rays pe*****te the many-windowed façade, heat the concrete floors only in the cool months, and are repelled during the summer. Deep overhangs help mitigate solar heat gain for the south facing building.

⚡ DOAS (Dedicated Outdoor Air System) provides 100% fresh outdoor air to the building and uses exhausted air to condition incoming fresh air. This system reclaims energy and, in turn, saves a significant amount on energy costs compared to a traditional HVAC system.

⛈️ Stormwater management system that not only slows infiltration into the surrounding hillside for more efficient management, but also reuses the water on-site, reducing water waste.

🌿 Layered plantings that help absorb and slow water, preventing erosion. After water passes through the rain garden, a system of pipes redirects the water to the nearby stormwater system and waters the 9-hole course.
