Some of the 3ROC crew recently took their Monday off to go climbing at the Seldom Seen area and as Wren stated “urban climbing is way underrated!”

We think this is often the case about the outdoor scene in Western Pa, underrated!! So much to do and so many places to explore outdoors in Pittsburgh and around the region.

What places do you think are underrated?

In 2018, Tree Pittsburgh planted 200 trees in Seldom Seen as part of a Riparian Buffer restoration project along Saw Mill Run Creek. You might have seen some of these trees in their protective sleeves near the salt dome entrance. The sleeves will be removed once the trees are well-established.

Buffers are an easy way to help improve water quality in our local rivers and streams. Pennsylvania has over 86,000 miles of rivers and...

In 1953, artist Nat Youngblood created a series of watercolor paintings of life in Seldom Seen for a feature in The Pittsburgh Press. At that time, the only road into the small neighborhood of less than 15 houses was "Watkins Lane", now known as the trail starting from the salt dome and passing under the brick entrance tunnel along Saw Mill Run.

If you have any information about these paintings, we'd love to see them in color!

A forest in the middle of the city...

The Seldom Seen Greenway is a large tract of wooded land in the city of Pittsburgh connecting several city neighborhoods, parks, schools, business districts, and residential areas in the Saw Mill Run watershed. Historical roads, railways, and farm paths are now casual hiking trails that only hint at the history of the area, and are badly in need of maintenance. For years dedicated volunteers (notably from but not limited to the Friends of Seldom Seen and the Saw Mill Run Watershed Association) fought to keep the greenway green amidst plans for redevelopment and high rise apartments. Renewed interest in the area has resulted in folks from several surrounding communities and organisations coming together with these steadfast guardians of the greenway to form the Seldom Seen Working Group. Together with the city we hope to form a plan for long-term stewardship. Keep an eye on this page for events, work days, and news. See you around the Greenway :)
