Happy Spring! Check out this Eastern Skunk Cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus). It is one of the first wet area plants to grow in late winter due to its ability to make heat, a process called thermogenesis. It also smells bad, just like our sewage!

"I was breathing in the air of inequity."
-Fernanda Ruiz

Thank you, Fernanda, for your beautiful and powerful words. This is how we redefine environmental justice to the injustices occurring at a personal level.

We stand with the organizations fighting long-standing inequities in my communities: , 412 Justice, Conservation Voters of Pennsylvania, , and Fair Shake Environmental Legal Services.

It is an honor to listen, learn, and activate my own Active Stewardship at the Pittsburgh Racial Justice Summit today.

"The corrosion and section loss resulted from clogged drains that caused water to run down bridge legs and accumulate along with debris at the bottom of the legs, which prevented the development of a protective rust layer or patina." - Collapse of the Fern Hollow Bridge, National Transportation Safety Board

FIXING WATER INFRASTRUCTURE ---> FIXES CITY INFRASTRUCTURE.
Treating stormwater as an afterthought is structural decay with a longer fuse. Just ask PRT Bus 61B and G31 🚌.

Thank you, Benjamin Kusserow, for pointing out this quote/connection. The Allegheny CleanWays GrateKeeper Program is a tactical solution to citizen science & action- direct monitoring, management, and maintenance of neighborhood storm drains.

Thank you, Upstream Pittsburgh & Neighborhood Allies, for hosting the Community Climate Readiness Expo last night in Homewood. I learned so much and enjoyed the rich discussion with neighbors, focused on local solutions, networks, and community building.
