Operation Walk Pittsburgh

Operation Walk Pittsburgh Operation Walk Pittsburgh provides free hip and knee replacement surgeries to those in need.

Operation Walk Pittsburgh is a volunteer organization dedicated to providing the gift of mobility to patients in need across Central America. Each mission trip involves a team of surgeons, nurses and other personnel who provide joint replacements and arthritis and joint health education completely free of cost. Operation Walk Pittsburgh works side by side with local surgeons, nurses and therapists

to share knowledge, expertise and encourage a true cultural and medical exchange. Since the inaugural trip to Antigua, Guatemala in 2009, Operation Walk Pittsburgh has assembled a volunteer team of surgeons, nurses, support staff and advocates to transform the lives of those in need in countries throughout Central America. These trips offer more than just life-changing surgeries, they are opportunities for cultural exchange and international medical cooperation.. Our Mission: Operation Walk Pittsburgh aims to provide life changing education, service and surgery completely free of cost, to patients in need in Pittsburgh and around the world.

The Last Patient Tradition is always one of the most meaningful moments for the Operation Walk Pittsburgh team. 💛

Each year, the final patient heading into surgery carries “The Terrible Towel” — a beloved symbol of the Pittsburgh Steelers and a reminder that their city is cheering them on.

It’s a tradition we look forward to every year. ✨ Throwback to our Mission 2023 Terrible Towel patient! 🏈

For years, Ciriaca lived in overwhelming pain — sometimes unable to walk across her own home without tears. She traveled to Obras again and again searching for relief, and this year she finally received the total knee replacement she desperately needed.

Today, she feels renewed hope. “Here, I was healed — a blessing from God,” she shared.

She now looks forward to something simple but powerful: walking without pain.

Because of your support, Operation Walk Pittsburgh continues to provide life-changing care and a chance at a brighter, pain-free future. 💙

Omar was one of Dr. Guthrie’s patients during Mission 2025, and his story will not be forgotten. ✨

Dr. Guthrie shares what Omar meant to her and the full Operation Walk Pittsburgh team! Meeting Omar and seeing him walk after surgery was incredibly meaningful. I was surprised to learn about his connection to Pittsburgh, hearing about his work as an engineer and professor in Guatemala City, his past trips to the city, and his love for the Pittsburgh Steelers. 🏈 It truly felt like a small-world moment.

What made his story even more remarkable is that we performed his first knee replacement several years ago and then completed his second during Mission 2025. Seeing any patient walk again is always emotional, but this experience felt extra special because of our shared connection to Pittsburgh. Omar was truly an ‘honorary yinzer.’ 💛🖤

This experience reinforced something I am constantly reminded of — the world is far more connected than we realize. As a physician, I strive to treat every patient like family, but Omar’s ties to both Pittsburgh and the engineering community made this feel especially personal.

Knowing that doctors from a city he loves were able to restore his mobility made this journey incredibly meaningful — for him and for our entire team.
