Happy Father’s Day from Hello Neighbor! 🧡

Today, we are celebrating the incredible kindness, resilience, and determination of the fathers and caregivers in our community. Raising a family is a massive undertaking, and we are constantly in awe of the dads who navigate it all while rebuilding their lives in a brand-new place.

When we asked our neighbor, Ali, what he’s most proud of since being resettled in Pittsburgh, his answer was immediate: "the happiness of my family."

This sentiment is shared by so many of the parents & caregivers we walk alongside. Securing safety, stability, education, and new opportunities for their children are very often cited as some of their proudest accomplishments.

It’s a true joy and privilege to be a part of their journeys.

Today, June 20, is World Refugee Day. As we face the largest displacement crisis since World War II, it is crucial that we raise our voices for those seeking refuge and advocate for the expanded pathways to safety they deserve.

In the last decade alone, the total number of forcibly displaced people has doubled, surpassing 118 million people who have been forced to flee their homes.

Behind the statistics are real people with unique hopes, dreams, and stories. They are fighting tirelessly for a brighter, safer future for themselves and their families.

At Hello Neighbor, we honor the incredible courage and strength of our refugee neighbors. We remain firmly committed to helping refugee Pittsburghers rebuild their lives from the ground up, and we refuse to forget those who are still fighting to find sanctuary.

Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, a day representing hope, resilience, and the ongoing fight for justice.

On this day in 1865, more than 250,000 enslaved people in Texas finally learned of their freedom, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Following more than a century of community celebrations, activist Opal Lee successfully championed the movement to make Juneteenth a federal holiday, which was signed into law in 2021.

As we reflect on this history, we honor the generations of Black activists who have shaped the path toward true equity, and we stand in solidarity with those continuing that work today.

3 years into civil war, Sudan still faces the largest displacement and hunger crisis in the world. More than 11 million people have fled their homes: 11 million people who each have stories, dreams, and hopes for a brighter future.

Our neighbor, Nyawiir, is one of these people. After enduring dangerous conditions traveling from camp to camp, she and her children were finally approved for asylum here in Pittsburgh.

When she arrived, she was welcomed by Hello Neighbor. Our team helped her take the first steps toward rebuilding her life: like finding stable housing, securing her first job in the U.S., and enrolling her kids in school. Since those early days, we have been honored to be part of her story, providing ongoing support as her family navigates new milestones and challenges.

Nothing is easy about starting over from scratch, but Nyawiir takes on this new chapter with immense courage and resilience every day. As she says, “never hesitate to ask for help from others; that is very important.”

Thank you so much to KDKA-TV | CBS Pittsburgh for having us on to spread the word about our emergency food box partnership with Salem's Market and Grill! This initiative offers a way for supporters to easily donate a box of culturally-tailored pantry staples through Salem’s website, providing tangible relief to refugee families impact by SNAP benefit cuts.

Yesterday, our founder & CEO Sloane Davidson, Family Health Services Supervisor Aya Attal, and Salem’s Market & Grill CEO Abdullah Salem joined Heather Abraham to talk about how this program works and why it’s so important.

Our development team members Nadia & Anna were proud to represent Hello Neighbor last weekend at Netroots Nation, the largest progressive gathering in the U.S.!

Nadia had the honor of speaking on a panel hosted by La’Diamond Moseley of The Nonprofit Way, where panelists shared strategies and experiences navigating a shifting funding landscape.

She was joined by fellow nonprofit leaders Eshe Armah, Managing Director of OurSpace World, and Linzee Locke, Chief Operating Officer of Black Landscapers Alliance.

It was wonderful to speak with other individuals & organizations working to make their own communities more welcoming places for all. Thank you for having us!

Speeches will begin at 2:30, with dance performances from Indonesian LD Flash Mob & Chinese Cultural Center from 3:00-4:00.

Happy Pride Month from Hello Neighbor! 🌈

We’re proud stand with our LGBTQ+ neighbors and honor the profound courage of q***r refugees.

Around the world, a growing number of individuals must flee their home countries to escape persecution based on their sexuality or gender identity. During migration, q***r refugees are also disproportionately vulnerable to violence and discrimination in transit countries & while awaiting asylum.

There is a long way to go in offering true sanctuary. Currently, only 1 in 4 host countries formally grant asylum based on LGBTQ+ persecution.

At Hello Neighbor, we believe everyone deserves to feel safe, welcome, and free in their home. Today and every day, we celebrate our LGBTQ+ community the fight for a safer, more inclusive world for all.

Our Preferred Communities GAPS team is accepting referrals for new clients.

This program is designed to help new neighbors build stability through short-term, light-touch case management for a typical duration of three months. The GAPS team can connects clients to community resources, such as affordable housing opportunities, utility CAP programs, and neighborhood food banks, and can also provide limited financial support.

Anyone who is ORR-eligible can enroll in this program (such as Refugees, SIVs, and those with TPS or parole status).
