He’s a husband, a father, an educator and a self-described gym rat. When Bob Horbaczewski got infected with COVID-19 in December 2020, he began a journey he had never imagined.

After a harrowing time under medical care, spending more than four months at three different hospitals, Horbaczewski received a second chance through a double-lung transplant from an organ donor.

“Hard things come up in life, and I think that when you understand that you’re built to do hard things, it’s easier to face them and to overcome them,” Horbaczewski says. 💙

⭐ Volunteer spotlight: Irene Marra ⭐

💙 Connection to donation: My connection to organ donation began 11 years ago when I received a double-lung transplant from a generous donor.

💭 Favorite Memory: My favorite event I attend is speaking to the graduating nurses. I feel that they gain a deeper understanding of organ donation. My all-time favorite is walking the Fiesta Bowl Parade.

🤝 Why do you volunteer with DNA? I volunteer because I love to encourage and educate others about my experience and the incredible gift my donor gave me. DNA has created a family for us all. We are connected to everyone we meet, and it’s all because of DNA.

In 2022, Luke Pelka and his wife, Alexi Kuska, had to cancel a planned mountain biking trip to Haleakalā Volcano in Hawaii because he felt concerned about his health. Pelka, then diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy and LMNA genetic mutation, faced severe heart and kidney failure and constant anxiety.

Pelka’s heart condition was particularly distressing because he had an ejection fraction of just 12%, meaning its blood flow was very weak. Late one night, Pelka received the call for his lifesaving transplant.

After 20 hours of surgery, he successfully received a new heart and kidney. They later returned to Hawaii.

“I remember asking the guide, ‘If I want to pedal the fastest, where can I go?’” he said. 🌋

Each year, the Navajo Code Talker statue watches over Wesley Bolin plaza across from the Arizona State Capitol during Donate Life Day at the Capitol.

Navajo Code Talkers were Native American Marines who used the Navajo language, Diné Bizaad, to create an unbreakable code during World War II.

This code securely transmitted vital military messages, and it was never broken by enemy forces. Their work played a crucial role in U.S. victories, including at Iwo Jima, and remained classified until 1968.

Navajo Code Talkers Day, Aug. 14 every year, highlights the importance of inclusion, especially the power of bilingualism and cultural diversity, in strengthening our nation and securing its future.
