Paul is a retired firefighter and paramedic. His message is very clear: Registering as an organ and tissue donor can make a significant impact on many lives, including the ones you leave behind.

His commitment to promoting organ and tissue donation is deeply personal. His daughter Barbara, whom he lovingly calls Barbie, passed away in 2005. He and Barbie’s mother made the decision to authorize the donation of Barbie’s liver and kidneys to help others.

“I know that they did everything they could to save her life and for that I am eternally grateful,” he says, remembering his daughter as a vibrant and caring young woman. 💓

Delfina Arroyo says she has a prominent family history of cancer, including having lost her aunt and brother to the disease. Yet she felt surprised when doctors told her she was also prone to breast cancer because of a gene mutation.

This left the mother of two and tissue recovery technician with Donor Network of Arizona with the difficult decision of whether to wait for cancer or have a preventative double mastectomy.

“I [just thought] if I can take care of this with one surgery versus have my kids later on deal with the pain I’ve dealt with, then I’d rather just do it,” Arroyo says.

Arroyo resumed a healthy life after reconstructive surgery following her mastectomy. Now a tissue recipient, the most important part of all was hugging her children again.

For Rosa Estrada, organ donation has been part of her story for more than 30 years. After losing her transplanted kidney, Rosa’s sister became her living donor and gave her a second chance at life.

Latino and Hispanic communities make up 24% of Arizona’s transplant waiting list, highlighting the continued need for donors from the community.

Donation and transplantation can be successful between people of any race or ethnicity. However, shared genetic backgrounds can sometimes make it easier to find a compatible match.
