Phoenix Police Officer Ginarro New was killed when his patrol car was struck by a drunk driver that ran a red light at a high rate of speed at the intersection of Cave Creek Road and E Greenway Parkway at about 10:30 p.m.

The impact knocked Officer New's patrol car through a brick wall and caused it to overturn. Responding rescue crews extricated him from the vehicle and transported him to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle was also killed in the collision. The driver was later determined to have had a BAC of 0.223 at the time of the crash.

Officer New was a was a native of Coolidge, Arizona and a U.S. Marine who never stopped wanting to serve his community.

He is survived by his wife, mother, brother, and grandmother.

Phoenix Police Officer Kenneth Collings was shot and killed while working a uniformed off-duty security job at a local bank. He was in the process of arresting two robbery suspects when one of the suspects opened fire, fatally wounding him. One of the suspects was arrested shortly thereafter and the second suspect was arrested in Mexico in June 2000 after being wounded in a shootout with police. The suspect was extradited to Arizona after state prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty.

In November 2002 the suspect was sentenced to life in prison.

Officer Collings had been with the Phoenix Police Department for eight years and at the time of his death was survived by his mother and four sisters.

Phoenix Police Officer Travis Murphy was shot and killed when he confronted a suspect who had fled the scene of a shots fired call earlier in the night.

Officers in a neighboring precinct responded to a report of shots fired. When they arrived, the perpetrator had fled, but they transmitted a description of the suspect's vehicle over their department radio. Several minutes later, dispatchers received reports that a man was seen attempting to hide a vehicle under a tarp at a vacant home. Officer Murphy, along with several officers, responded to the scene and started searching for the man on foot.

Officer Murphy encountered the suspect and was shot 10 times in the legs and lower abdomen. Other officers immediately placed him in a patrol car and took him to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds a short time later.

The suspect was taken into custody after being found hiding in a nearby shed. On November 18, 2015, he was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life.

Officer Murphy had served with the Phoenix Police Department for four and a half years. At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, 2-year-old daughter, 2-week-old son, mother, step-father, and step-brother.

Phoenix Police Sergeant Marty Kieffer died on May 21, 1997, from injuries he had sustained on May 7, 1977, when his patrol car was struck by a drunk driver. His vehicle was struck as he was responding to an emergency call. The drunk driver was killed in the incident. The crash left Sergeant Kieffer as a quadriplegic and he died as a result of complications of injuries sustained in the crash. At the time of his death Sergeant Kieffer was survived by his wife and four children.

On Thursday, May 19, 2016 police officer David Glasser succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained the previous day after responding to a burglary in progress at a home near the intersection of 51st Avenue and Baseline Road. The homeowner called 911 to report his son stealing items from the home. As officers arrived on the scene they encountered the son sitting in a van in the driveway. The subject immediately opened fire on the officers, striking Officer Glasser. Other officers returned fire and killed the subject.
Officer Glasser was transported to a local hospital where he remained in critical condition until succumbing to his wounds the following day. Officer Glasser had served with the Phoenix Police Department for 12 years and was assigned to the Neighborhood Enforcement Team. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Phoenix Police Officer Daryl Raetz was struck and killed by an SUV while making an arrest for DUI near the intersection of 51st Avenue and Cambridge Drive. At approximately 3:30 am Officer Raetz, along with several other officers, was processing a DUI suspect on the side of road when a passing SUV struck Officer Raetz. He was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital where he died. The driver of the SUV fled the scene. He was arrested the following day after another officer spotted his vehicle and recognized it as matching the description of the vehicle that struck Officer Raetz. The subject is an illegal alien and was charged with drug possession. He pleaded no contest to charges of negligent homicide and hit-and-run with death or injury and was sentenced to serve eight years and an additional seven years of probation.
Officer Raetz was a veteran of the Iraq war and had served with the Phoenix Police Department for six years. At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, child, parents, and brother.

Phoenix Police Officer Don Schultz drowned in a canal in North Phoenix while searching for evidence in a murder case.

Officer Schultz was a master diver and part of the department's nine-member dive team. On May 10, 2004, the team entered a canal in North Phoenix, near 19th Avenue and Hatcher Road, to search for evidence in a murder investigation. While in the water, Officer Schultz was separated from his tender line and was pulled into the canal gate. He was under water for as long as 10 minutes without a breathing device. On May 12, 2004, he passed away.

Officer Schultz had served with the Phoenix Police Department for 20 years. In addition to his duties as a member of the dive team, Officer Schultz also served full time as a helicopter pilot for the Phoenix Police Department.

At the time of his death Officer Schultz was survived by his wife and mother.

A memorial marker was placed near 19th Ave and Hatcher Rd.
