At StreetLightUSA, we believe--with every fiber of our being-- that every child is worth saving. Children from our own neighborhoods are being enticed, deceived and sold like property. They are our most vulnerable population - children who have endured horrific circumstances at the hands of people they trusted. These are survivors. e to shine light, show love, and encourage these girls as they walk the path of healing, combined with our awareness of and experience with the complex trauma-informed care they require. 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗵’𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗲𝘁.

She kept most of her things close.

Her shoes stayed beside the bed.

Her bag stayed packed.

She didn’t know the routines yet.

She didn’t know who she could trust.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲.

The same room.

The same bed.

The same staff nearby.

A door she could close.

𝗔 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴.

After a while, her bag wasn’t packed anymore.

Her shoes found a spot by the bed.

A few things appeared on the dresser.

Nothing dramatic happened.

She just started settling in.

Sometimes safety looks like having the same place to wake up tomorrow.

Maya’s story didn’t change all at once.

It happened slowly.

A safe place to sleep.

Someone remembering her name.

A ride to an appointment.

A meal waiting at the end of the day.

A few small moments that began to make tomorrow feel possible.

For the first two months, Kelly barely spoke.

She had learned not to trust others

The safest way to get through the day was to say nothing.

Take up as little space as possible.

Stay small.

But every day, one of our staff members sat beside her.

She never pushed.

Never asked Kelly to explain.

She simply said,

“Hi. You don’t have to talk until you’re ready.”

Then she came back the next day.

And the day after that.

For two months, the conversation stayed almost exactly the same.

“Hi.”

No pressure.

No deadline.

Just someone quietly proving she would still be there tomorrow.

Eventually, Kelly began to talk.

Not because someone found the perfect words.

Because someone kept showing up long enough for silence to feel safe.

That is what The Someone Project helps make possible.

𝗢𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆.

Maya wasn't thinking about Christmas when she first started her healing journey.

She was wondering where she would sleep.

Today, 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗷𝗼𝗯.

𝗦𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.

𝗦𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱.

Most importantly, 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲.

But stories like Maya's don't happen overnight.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆'𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀.

A bed that's ready.

A meal shared around a table.

A ride to counseling.

A mentor who keeps showing up.

𝗡𝗼𝘄, 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗮 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝘁.

Unsure of who to trust.

Unsure of where to go.

Unsure if things can ever change.

There are only a few days left to be part of Christmas in July.

𝗕𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁.

One has cupcake batter.

Another is covered in paint.

Across the room, tie-dye shirts are slowly becoming every color imaginable.

Last week was full of those kinds of moments at Little Dreamers Schoolhouse.

Rock painting ended up becoming one of the kids' favorite activities. They kept comparing their designs, asking for "just one more," and deciding exactly where each finished rock should go.

A special thank you to one of our generous donors for providing the rocks that made the activity possible. Sometimes it's the simplest things that end up creating the biggest smiles.

We'll be sharing a few photos from the week so you can see some of the creativity, laughter, and colorful memories that filled our classrooms.

Every week looks a little different, but it's always full of opportunities for kids to learn, create, and simply enjoy being kids.

More often, it's a room that's ready.

A meal someone didn't have to worry about.

A quiet morning with a cup of coffee.

A staff member who remembers their name.

The ordinary moments don't always stand out on their own. But over time, they begin to add up.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻'𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿.

Eventually, the ornaments came down.

But something about that moment stayed with Maya.

For the first time in a long time, she had chosen something just for herself. She picked the colors. She helped make a small space feel like it belonged to her.

It wasn't really about the tree.

It was about what it represented.

Someone had listened.
Someone had noticed.
Someone had cared enough to make her very first Christmas tree possible.

Little by little, moments like these began changing the way Maya saw herself... and what she believed might be possible.

And before long, people began asking her a question she never thought she would have to answer:

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗮 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀, 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗼𝘂𝘀.

She had learned that kindness usually came with strings attached. But slowly, through simple check-ins, steady care, and staff who kept showing up without asking anything in return, something began to change.

One hard day after therapy, Maya was asked if she wanted to help with a project. She was not in a place to jump in right away, so she quietly told a leader she needed time to process what she had worked through.

She expected disappointment.
Maybe even guilt.
Instead, she was given space.
"𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗸𝗮𝘆. 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲. 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗷𝘂𝗺𝗽 𝗶𝗻."

That moment stayed with her. For the first time in a long time, Maya realized she did not have to earn kindness. She did not have to repay compassion. She could simply receive care.

That trust became part of her healing.
