At StreetLightUSA, we believe--with every fiber of our being-- that every child is worth saving. Children from our own neighborhoods are being enticed, deceived and sold like property. They are our most vulnerable population - children who have endured horrific circumstances at the hands of people they trusted. These are survivors. Our mission at StreetLightUSA is anchored in a Christ-driven desire to shine light, show love, and encourage these girls as they walk the path of healing, combined with our awareness of and experience with the complex trauma-informed care they require. Our aim is to help each and every girl find her true purpose in life, whether we plant a seed of hope or walk alongside her into adulthood.

𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀, 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿. 💚

Not every step forward comes with a big announcement.
Sometimes it's joining a game instead of watching from the sidelines.
Laughing so hard you forget what was funny.

Or feeling comfortable enough to be a little silly without worrying what anyone might think.

For the children and teens we serve at Where Hope Lives, moments of joy are just as worthy of celebrating as the big milestones.

𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱.

It's also about having the safety, support, and freedom to discover what comes next.

And sometimes, what comes next is simply being a kid.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 Schoolhouse. 😂

We recently added Jenga and Connect 4 to the game collection, and apparently Connect 4 required a scoreboard.

Because obviously we need documentation of these victories.
In between some very serious competition, the kids have been busy making fall leaves, decorating cookies, building a forest and fall shadow box, and even making pizza together. 🍂

But some of our favorite moments lately have happened around the table.
The kids are getting more comfortable with each other, which means conversations are starting to sound a lot like friends sitting around a kitchen table talking about whatever comes into their heads.

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿.

One minute it's school.
Next we're trying to determine whether Sonic the Hedgehog is an alien or simply a creature from another dimension. 😂
𝗡𝗼 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝘆𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱.

There's something really good about watching a room become comfortable enough for conversations like that.

Homework gets done. Crafts get made. Connect 4 champions are apparently being established.

And somewhere in between, friendships are forming and kids are getting more comfortable just being themselves.

We've also welcomed a new little friend on the infant side, so Little Dreamers has been growing in more ways than one lately. 💛

𝗪𝗲’𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 2nd “𝗯𝗲𝗿” 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵!!

Which means the holidays are coming whether we're emotionally prepared for them or not. 😂
And around here, that means we're starting to make lists.
Not Christmas lists. Yet.

𝗪𝗲'𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘁 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝗲𝗻𝗶𝘅 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀.

We learned this at our last tournament while watching one very experienced player repeatedly roll his eyes as his much newer teammate missed a play. 😂

We had residents playing. Staff playing. A few NFL players playing. People who were there to have fun and people who very clearly came to WIN.

And we're doing it again.

𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀.

Sometimes you get to do that.
But first…there may be a closet. 😂
Recently, volunteers helped us tackle our event closet.
Boxes pulled out.
Things sorted.
Things reorganized.

And probably at least a few moments of wondering why we owned something in the first place.

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗹𝘆? 𝗪𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝗢 𝗴𝗹𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗽.

A lot of volunteering here looks like that.
Wiping windows.
Cleaning up the parking lot.
Painting a room.

Organizing a closet that someone on staff has been avoiding for longer than they'd like to admit. 😂

It’s not always the part people picture when they think about volunteering.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲’𝘀 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴.

And sometimes, the people who start by showing up for a service day keep showing up. They become familiar faces. Trusted partners. And over time, some of them get the opportunity to serve alongside our residents, too.

And honestly, some of our favorite conversations happen when someone comes through the doors and sees it for themselves.

We’ve met amazing partners.
Watched someone decide this was the place they needed to heal.
We’ve even had kids want to get involved.

No tour is exactly like the other, and we have had multiple people come on to multiple tours, always something new to learn

Today, we remember.

We remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the families who were forever changed, and the brave first responders and everyday heroes who stepped forward in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

Twenty-five years later, we honor their memory by choosing to live with courage, compassion, and hope.

At Where Hope Lives, we believe that no matter what someone has walked through, their story is not over. We have the privilege of witnessing that truth every day as women discover healing, find their strength, and begin to believe in a new future.

Today, we pause to remember those we lost and to pray for the families and communities who still carry that loss.

May we never forget.
May we continue to choose hope.
And may we always remember the power of a life restored.

Never forgotten. Always remembered. 🇺🇸

And, slowly, space to figure out who she is outside of what happened to her.

At first, they’re pretty practical.
Did you eat?
Do you need an appointment?
Do you have what you need today?

Then eventually someone gets to ask:

"𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁?"

And honestly, that can be a hard question.
School?
A career?
Her own place?
A family?
Something she hasn’t even figured out yet?

There’s no rush to have the perfect answer.
