“I did this for my kids.”
I’ll never forget a conversation I had with one of our GROW moms, sitting beside the pool one summer as our children splashed and played together.
Lila* had immigrated here from North Africa. In her home country, she served in organizational leadership, and her husband owned a construction company. They had a beautiful home near the sea. But as their country continued to face economic crisis, they began to worry about the future of their children.
Since immigrating to the USA, Lila and her husband have struggled to make ends meet, as the cost of living here is much higher. They have been learning English in hopes of finding better employment and rebuilding their lives.
“We left everything behind. I miss my country, my community, and my family. Some days I cry a lot. But I didn’t do this for me; I did it for my kids. Here, they will get a good education and have opportunities for the future. As moms, we do anything for our children…”
To the immigrant moms who have given much and loved much: you are our heroes. Today, we honor you. May the Lord bless you and keep you. 💕
Happy Mother's Day from all of us at GROW!
