August is National Minority Donor Awareness Month. This month highlights organ donation and transplantation in communities of color, encourages people to register as donors, and promotes healthy living to help reduce the need for transplants.
- Over half of the people waiting for organ transplants are from communities of color.
- A kidney from a living donor usually lasts about 15 to 20 years, while one from a deceased donor lasts 8 to 12 years. Some last longer, and some may not last as long.
