"Calling us to protect the divine image of our humanity, our tradition is clear. Do not walk away. Do not avert your eyes. Do not remain indifferent. Without the principle, lo tuchal le'hitalem, do not remain indifferent, the principle b'tzelem Elohim, created in God's image, doesn't stand a chance. But taken together, we can cultivate an environment where, as the commentary says, we live in a city -- a place that cares where we teach our children accountability. Where we cannot avert our eyes -- for we are all created in the image of God."

Three years ago this morning, on Simchat Torah, the communities along the Gaza border woke to horror, and Kibbutz Be'eri lost more than a hundred of its residents. Israeli poet Adi Blechman Sofer wrote this poem in the weeks after, imagining the red anemones that draw crowds to the region every winter blooming with no one left to see them, and we share it today as a way of holding that grief together.

Join us for a engaging discussion of Professor Lila Corwin Berman’s timely new book, Who is American? Belonging and the Question of Jewish Citizenship, which explores how law and Jewish identity shape the ongoing debate over American citizenship.

This thought-provoking program comes at a particularly timely moment, with the Supreme Court’s recent consideration of the 14th Amendment’s Citizenship Clause and ongoing cases considering Jewish students’ civil rights claims. Hosted by our LawyeRS Engagement Group and sponsored by the Joseph W. Rosenbluth Fund.
