Nigel Semaj (they/them) is a DC native and Baltimore-based director, movement director, writer, and educator. They are an Assistant Professor of Performance at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where they teach primarily movement styles and physical theatre techniques. Nigel’s work speaks to those who have been attuned to sound the banshees’ wail. For those whose lives have been touched by deep grief. Their adaptation work include 10,000 Moor (an adaptaion of Titus Andronicus), For Hylas (an adaptation of the Hercules’ myth), and Call Me By Any Other Name…Just As Sweet (a q***r deconstruction of Romeo and Juliet). Their choreography blends language and gesture, with credits across theatre, opera, and film, including Beethoven’s Fidelio, Bryony Lavery’s Slime, and new plays such as AJ Clauss’ SALTY and more recently VOYAGES Chapter 7 at The National Aquarium in Baltimore MD. Upcoming projects include the serpent under’t, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. They are the inaugural Artist-in-Residence at the SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University, where they are developing a new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People.
